1996 960 Starter RnR problem

1996 960 Starter RnR problem

I have gotten the two bolts off the starter but it won't come out. Am I missing something, is there something else holding it in? I have got it to move out about a 1/4 inch but it won't come out any further. HELP!!!!!!!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Working from a very creaky memory I think that there is a retaining plate on the other end of the starter motor for the 6 cylinder engine. It would be fastened to two studs coming out of the starter and bolted, with one bolt to the block.

As I said "very creaky memory" but I hope it helps.

And yes you are correct. As I spent he day underneath this ride I encounterd this bracket. When they built this car, did the expect that the starter would never need replacing. There is alot of stuff to meander through just to be able to feel these bolts not to mention getting them off. But I will keep this thread posted as to how it all goes.

Is there anybody who can tell me how to get in there and get those bolts out. It seems that if I just remove the one to the block then I might be able to get the whole assembly out of there. Anybody know? :?

Creaky memory part 2.

I think the accepted way is to take out the bolt as the nuts on the end of the starter are obstructed by the bracket.

Ok I got it out with the help of a smaller handed friend. He came in from the bottom and then down on top of the bolt that holds the bracked onto the block. After he was able to get the bolt loose it took many times with small turns to get it out. Then the starter came out with no problem. 170 dollars from XL Auto parts and I got a new one. Took the starter to Auto Zone to have it tested and it was froze up. Will be putting in the new one this afternoon.

Remember to nail one foot of your 'smaller handed friend' to the floor so he/she does not escape before you get it back together.

HAHAHAHA yea I gothim by the big toe for sure. It seems though that when you go out and try to buy one of these starters you have to be carefull not to obtain the 10 1/2 inch version. The one that comes out of this car is the 9 1/2 inch version. Anyway with a few call it was located and will be secured here later this morning. Seems as though the new starter will go in nicely and all should be well. After this job I will be attacking some noisy lifters so that will be another thread altogether. Bill, do you know anything about lifters getting a clankey. If so let me know what you have experienced.

Afraid not. The lifters are hydraulic and usually no maintenance is required.
Occasionally as the engine gets older they do rattle a little until it is warmed up. A bit like my joints really.

Unless the noise is excessive and continuous I would leave them.

Bill's information on removing the starter is great! But, what in the heck was Volvo thinking? :evil: -- I understand Bill's instructions, but am having trouble implementing the bolt's removal. The bolt connecting the starter's bracket to the engine block is ridiculously hard to get to. I'm wondering if there is something else I need to remove to get to this bolt. :?:

So far, from underneath the car I've removed the dipstick from the oil pan (and cut the clamp where 2 wires were attached to the dipstick). I can feel the 2 nuts on the end of the starter, but cannot get my wrench on the bolt connecting the bracket to the engine block. My teenage son has smaller hands & longer fingers and he can get to it barely, but does not have the leverage to get the bolt loose.

We loosened the preheater pipe as getting that out would provide some more room, but cannot get the preheater to slide out, but we can move it around a bit. Any ideas, or suggestions on tools used, would be most appreciated!
