1990 740 B230F Flame Trap located, how to maneuver hoses off?

Post by CarCapers »

For some reason, most of the guidance on how to find the flame trap is a needlessly frustrating where's Waldo type exercise. Why no orientation clues of the general neighborhood of the engine to look in, what angle to look from, videos that look like they were taken by a drunk wedding guest, pictures taken in very low light, a finger pointing to a tangle of black rubber hoses, black cable housing, grimy black metal parts, etc etc etc? Editorial over ;-)
For those who are looking: 1) Stand on the passenger side of the engine compartment, 2) Look at what's on the other side of the raised letters "VOLVO" cast on the valve cover, 3) Look closely just "north" of the first 'O' in VOLVO, 4) In this very crowded space look just north of the bolt on the valve cover 5) Look for the black hose fitting that flares out where it attaches to flame trap housing and a smaller rubber tube coming off the housing at 90 degrees. (see attached photos)
Now that I have (finally) located the flame trap I have two questions 1) What is the best way to maneuver/wrestle the hoses off without damaging them 2) Should I buy new housing, upper hose and horizontal hoses before taking things apart (because on a 1990 car they might be toast or break)?

The flame trap on these 4 cylinders Volvos are a pain. Start by removing the air intake tube on the bottom of the throttle body. Remove anything else (like the Idle Control Valve) that makes it easier to get your hands in there under the intake manifold. Use a variety of screw driver lengths for any hose clamps. If you must get the car back together for your transportation, buy replacements before you start. Some of these hoses are originally slip on with out clamps. But as the hoses age the fit gets loose and you may want to use a clamp. The old hoses will also split at the ends. The flame trap itself can be cleaned with solvents. Install any hose clamps in the best position to get them off the next time.
Work on this task when you have good patience.

Thank you Volvo Lug Nut! I will order the parts now and that will give me time to build up a reservoir of patience for some gnarly disassembly for access to the flame trap. I have a brand new flame trap piece ready to swap in but seems best to just plan to swap in new housing etc so (hopefully) to increase the chances it will all be done in one session.

See this post by June if you missed it. A fine 740 example.
