1998 v70 t-5 no crank

Post by reluctantmechanic »

Hi,
Last winter I posted about a crank but no start condition with my 1998 v70 T5. Now, it won't crank. I have charged the battery on the charger and cleaned the terminals. When I turn the key, I get a click like the starter solenoid is activated, but activation/turning of the starter motor. After I try to start it, the electronic odometer and the status bar showing clock and mileage, etc, show all "8"s for about 15 seconds; then the clock returns to 12:00, and the other electronic digits show zeros, or whatever they would normally show. From these symptoms, any idea what is causing this condition? Many thanks in advance.

That battery voltage is falling too low to keep the CDM logic circuitry happy. Watch the cranking voltage to see how low it drops..wiring or battery test under load needed.

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to be sure the electronic digits turning to all 8s was not indicative of a backfeed or some electrical problem, that would destroy the computer. This car was out of my possession for quite awhile and has only recently returned "home," so I am trying to get it running again. Basically, I drove it to the store, went back to the car 40 min later and it would crank, but no start. This was several months ago, and no progress was happening at the mechanic's shop, so I towed it home. After I solve the cranking problem, I'll move back over to the other thread I started, so if I solve the problem, I can post it there. Thanks again.

Check B+ connections at fuse box, starter, and alternator, check for resistance in B+ connections, then check grounds. Try bridging starter relay with two screwdrivers or a wire.
If no crank you either have bad battery or bad starter. Can check battery by watching volts while cranking. Should drop but not too far. If drops a lot then your battery is probably sulfated and can't handle load. Bad cranking capacity batteries can still show 12+ volts. If you haven't yet you ought to get it tested at an autoparts store.
Cheers

Edit: for what it's worth I had this same problem around a month ago; was a loose connection at positive alternator connection. Dash would show 0s and random digits just like yours. It'd crank on a jump and start but wouldn't charge good enough to start after I shut her down.

Thanks for the info. I will do exactly what you are referring to and I'll leave a message back here for others to refer to in the future. Thanks again.
