My daughter has an early '04 S40 (T4) since new with 112k miles on the 1.9L turbo. Everything was running fine until this week. The engine stalls within seconds of what seems like a normal start-up. No OBD codes are set and no check engine light illuminated.
Note that the timing belt, tensioner, serpentine belt, water pump and upper as well as lower radiator hoses were replaced two weeks ago. The car ran normally every day since this work was done. Will check timing first to make sure the belt did not slip.
Any other suggestions appreciated.
Thank you,
Ken

I was going to mention cam timing but also check all of your hoses to see if any of them have a hole in them or have slipped off. Another possibility is the MAF (mass airflow sensor). Sometimes they give no code. Finally, I would check fuel related things- fuel filter (if it's never been changed, change it) as well as the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump if that's not it.

Matthew,
Problem has been fixed on the S40. The timing belt tensioner was either defective or incorrectly set-up when it was installed because it failed after about 200 miles. A new tensioner and meticulous, spec-compliant set-up took care of the problem.
Thanks for the help!

Matthew owns the site and I'm David, but that's ok.
Glad you got sorted and the bad tensioner didn't take your belt with it... otherwise your engine would have been toast. Seriously, you were very very lucky!
