2007 turbo interchangeability?

Post by jkatz »

TL:DR I'm shopping for a replacement turbo for a high VIN 2007 XC70 and a local guy has one from a 2001, will it work on my engine?

A seal failed in my turbo on the highway. I was going up a hill and suddenly the engine missed a few times and a cloud of blue smoke appeared behind me. People were flashing their lights and getting out from behind me, it was a real scene. Maybe I am an optimist or maybe I'm a dope, but I tried to get as close to home as I could without blowing the rest of the engine and I drove about 15 more miles before giving up and calling for a 40 mile tow. By that time the turbo was rattling and I think the entire vacuum system was slurping oil, and of course there was not much left (1 qt) in the pan. The oil pressure light did not illuminate and the temp gauge didn't rise, so I'm still hoping I only need a turbo repair.
The local junkyard has a unit from a 2002 vehicle, a guy on craigslist has one from a 2001 vehicle, and I see a used one on ebay from a 2007 xc90. they're all the same price - $200 - way higher than the $40 I saw someone else report from their junkyard!
The benefit of the 2001 turbo is I can get it this weekend. The junkyard is an early next week thing, and the ebay one is probably a late next week thing. Will the 2001 turbo fit? I don't have a model number or photo of the tag, the guy's parts car is about an hour away and he won't get there until saturday. Mine is a 14T.

edit: here is a photo of his turbo, can anyone tell whether it is a 14T based on its shape?
