14T turbo on a 2001 v70xc?

Post by jkatz »

TL:DR: I need a turbo for my 2007 XC70 and I could get one from a 2001 v70xc - will it work?

I'm re-posting because I think I broke my last post, I can't load it. So I need a new turbo. Long story short, there was a stutter on a big hill on the highway, a few misfires, a big cloud of blue smoke, and eventually a rattling in the turbo. I have a choice between a known fitting 14T unit from ebay, or this mystery unit on the local craigslist. The mystery unit had fairly low miles (150k) but was on a 2001 V70XC, presumably a 2.4T. The guy who owns it can't go get it until tomorrow, so I don't know what the tag says. Is it likely to say 14T, or is it more likely to say 13T? if it says 13T, do I pass on it and get the ebay unit?

Actually now I see this post, with a link to a core, maybe I’ll try that first.

Rattling, that sounds like the shaft snapped.
did you extract the broken turbo yet?
You need the numbers from that to match up.

I would go with a reman/balanced core.

That's what I did with my Audi A4. The whole center section is new and you just reassemble it.

I haven't extracted the broken unit yet. But I did just order a reman core that said it fits my year, I hope that is true. What numbers do I need? More than just the 14T?

This is the one I bought:

So does this mean I just remove the band clamp and push aside the exhaust, no new gaskets required? Or do I still need to break loose the turbo from the manifold & downpipe to replace the core?

Remove banjo bolts for coolant and oil feed, then band clamp.
Lift turbo out, drain tube comes with it.
Take very careful note of how it twists because it has to go back with identical motion in reverse.
It helps to have someone guide the drain into its hole , take a pic with cellphone to make sure the oil drain seal is seated... it's not visible.
Alternatively , mount turbo and 8nstall drain tube but awd angle gearbox makes it very difficult.
Extended allen driver helps and universal swivel.
Oh yeh, be sure to add witness mark to match the 2 turbo halves back again,, supposed to be a locating pin but nope.

This low profile ratchet wrench helps loosening the lower banjo bolts, there's not much room for regular ratchet.
Harbor freight.

Order new copper washers, 2 for each bolt.

Thanks for the help, both of you!
I’ll pick up the ratchet tonight. I ordered 2 copper washers. Somehow I always forget there are 2 per bolt. Maybe I can find a pair at my local advance auto.

You need 6 for the 3 banjo bolts.
2 coolant lines and 1 oil feed.

Doh! Clearly I’m barely able to keep my head above water on this car project. Thanks again.
