This is the second time i know of that a TCU replacement cleared transmission codes. I had it happen on a 98 s70 before which presented with the flashing arrow of death. Glad its resolved!

Very strange when logic actually fixes something 
bought a 2nd one as spare, so long as they are cheap.
I think mine already had issues for some years, as per the points I listed that are working much better now.

Today I had time to take my faulty TCU apart. I just wanted to see if there is anything obvious.
The only thing I can see is the one big green cap (c602 5.5v 0.022F) might be bulging a little bit. Everything else looks fine to me, but doing anything else than visual inspection is beyond me. Thought maybe someone might be interested in the pics or might have suggestion on how to fix it.
Maybe I'll try and replace all the caps on it... just for fun. It did work fine other than all the TPS related issues.

On a 2000 V70 base I had, I had TCU errors but the issue was corroded/oxidised pins on the TCU. The dealer figured it out after I had spent hours trying to sort it. I could not get Vida to talk to the TCU which should have been a clear pointer to me! Having said that the car still ran fine in my case, it just liked to throw random TCU codes and Engine check light and ABS codes as well.

That TCU is from '93 model.

I am not familiar with the TCUs. But, when I searched for the model number (P3545864) it seemed to be correct for the T5R. The replacement I got I think is also a T93 and it works so far. I am not saying you are wrong, but does it even matter?
