2 coolant lines and 1 oil feed.
Doh! Clearly I’m barely able to keep my head above water on this car project. Thanks again.
recalling things i encountered,

In prep, soak the 2 bolts retaining the heat shield on the back of the engine, the bolt with the spring may snap off in the head.
Tighten, then loosen, then tighten etc, work it out.

Replace green viton oil drain O ring.

I ordered tri-colored vac line kit from IPD and replaced everything I could reach.

Drain some coolant out of the system to draw the level below the turbo but have lots of cardboard handy, some coolant will run out when lines are disconnected.

A magnetic retriever is very handy, mirror, good lighting.

If you detach the oil drain tube you might find these ext ball end allens handy, get the metric.

Good tip! I ordered new hoses from IPD. It was a good excuse to order the copper washers too. I think I have the viton o ring, I bought the gasket kit last year but never installed it.
Today I pulled the car into the garage. So much smoke.

If I remember right the turbo drain line bolts take a 5 mm hex internal key, a bit of an oddball size

I always buy at least one extra oring or banjo washer on these jobs as I always seem to contribute one to Dave Jones locker

I pulled the core while I wait for the reman unit to arrive. The cause of failure was evidently a clogged oil feed, I’m not yet sure whether it’s just the tube or the port at the block or a gallery in the oil pump itself. It’s a mystery to me how enough oil was drawn in from the PCV trap via vac lines to fill the compressor scroll, but it was full of oil despite the dry feed.

The O2 sensor readings illuminated the CEL before I stopped the car. What chance is there that they start working again after I drive a few miles on the highway and burn out the oil in the exhaust pipe? Will I improve the chances if I take the pre-cat one out and try to clean it? Maybe pull it out and hose it down with carb cleaner?

On this car the oil drain line is held by T30 screws.

maybe run some cat cleaner through the system.

it pays to always use synthetic oil

19 days later I started the car for the first time since it came home. I spent a lot of time catching up on maintenance: I changed the camshaft seals and VVT o rings (the intake VVT o ring seemed to be the source of the oil leak), TB (+ water pump, idler, tensioner), installed a new radiator(due to a small leak), installed a new voltage regulator (easy with the radiator already removed). These were parts I had already bought and hadn’t yet installed, and I was pretty sure my car would run again. I changed all of the 5mm vacuum hoses as recommended. I drained 2.5 quarts of oil out of the intercooler and the j-hose to the throttle body, but I did not take off the intake manifold to drain it (no replacement gasket on hand). I cleaned the oil feed and drain lines, added a tube of liquid moly new-turbo lube, and buttoned it all back up. I changed the oil - the pulverized bronze bearings and a decent amount of cast iron from the old turbo came out, hopefully mostly from the filter. I guess I’ll change the oil again in a few days to see how much more comes out. I soaked the pre-cat O2 sensor in gasoline to clean it.

Back to the startup. It started right up! But:
So much smoke came out I had to turn it off after about 15 seconds. So much that I can’t drive it out of my neighborhood until night, I’m afraid someone will call the fire department or I’ll get pulled over as soon as I reach the main road.
Is this from not draining the intake manifold?

After 15 minutes of driving, half in town and half on a 55mph road, the oil in the intake manifold seems to have burned off and the car feels great. It easily makes 1350 hPa boost (my iCarSoft only measures in hPa, I gather this is roughly 5 psi above atmospheric). Once it spiked up to 1400 hPa (6 psi). When I got home I popped the hood and was surprised to see the rubber hose joining the OTE pipe to the intercooler had nearly popped off.
Anyway I think this chapter is finally over!
