ABS module symptoms and loss of reverse gear

Post by FireFox31 »

Could the symptoms of a failing ABS module prevent my reverse gear from engaging?

Geronimo the 2000 V70 has classic ABS module failure symptoms: intermittently when driving or stopped, the speedometer temporarily goes to zero, odometer and trip counter show dashes, brake and ABS lights come on.

While stopped with the ABS failure symptoms, I put the car in reverse and the reverse gear did not engage. Pressing the gas pedal simply revved the engine. I shifted to drive and that worked. After a few minutes, the ABS failure stopped, the odometer returned and brake/ABS lights shut off, and the reverse gear engaged.

Other related problems: This happened when the battery was too weak to start the car, driving it on a jump start. The battery negative cable must have some kind of corrosion because sparks fly off the post upon the first engine start crank. The battery negative cable is broken at the transmission. I'll swap in a new battery and used negative cable.

As a test, could I swap in the ABS module from my identical 2000 V70 with STC? Is there any chance that problems in Geronimo could hurt my ABS module?

Thanks as always.

Wait, that’s a Canadian car! The ABS problems are caused by solder joint cracking, I really doubt you could hurt anything with a transplant. Plan on a mattymoo swap soon for Geronimo or if Jane Bond had STC, we can use that module

You need a solid battery in these cars or all’s kinds of wierd things will have you tail chasing

Yes, Jane Bond has STC so its ABS module would be a direct swap. I'm not headed your way any time soon though. Email or text me if you'll be passing through and could meet up.

When I started Geronimo today, ABS and speedometer were off, but it gladly went into reverse. A few days ago, the lack of reverse was directly tied to the lack of ABS/speedo, coming back when they did.

When driving, I hear the ABS pulsing when my foot is off the gas and brake at over 20 mph. It stops when I press my foot on the gas or brake. Granted, both rear brakes are seized pressing to the rotors, so that may confuse things. Those will be fixed in the next few days, with much swearing at their stuck fittings.

Negative cable at transmission housing MUST be connected.
That's main ground from battery negative terminal!

Have you try rowing the gear selector back and forth rapidly? Could be the PNP? When the ABS was lit on my 98 S70 T5 it did not affect the gear selector. Hold down the shift lever lock and move the lever slightly above and then below R to see if the gear engages? If it does then it's the PNP switch.

I have a 2003 Infiniti I35 my “TCS off” & ABS lights are on my car starts and drives but won’t reverse. Not sure of the exact problem? My tires are messed up as well at the moment. Is it my whole transmission or something as simple as a faulty gear , ring or ?
