Hatch latch 9203623/8628197 post-mortem

Post by foggydogg »

Some months ago when I closed the lid on the back of the '99NA/M, it was kind of final, UnGodly stuck it was. The adventure getting it open is elsewhere on this forum, including cutting the striker plate, 9485477, so I could fish the offending latch out of the bodywork.

I won't take up the bandwidth to rehash those details, but these bits would've been the part that trips the cog allowing the latch to give up its grip on the lock brace. Needless to say, no amount of pushing any magic levers on the side of the latch would've made an impression on it.

There is still some part number confusion about the chassis break, but it looks like it only involves 2-stage unlocking. The second part number above is the supersession number. I ignored all that and took the one off Olde Blue, the '98 V70 parts container.
I remain unconvinced that there is a serious difference in the latches in US market cars; they may have simply improved the replacement part and assigned a new part number.

Thanks for the post-mortem!

It looks very similar to our P2 tailgate latch that also was intermittent. In that case is was the spring end loop that had broken off. I had already bought a new one but repaired the original as a spare.

Just a note to add to the knowledge base

Behaviour noticed on V70

Actuating the driver door switch unlocks the rear tailgate, but does not 'spring' the tailgate free - no light on dash

On the S70

The driver door switch 'pops the trunk' and it lifts up.
