Sticker shock: motor mounts

Post by jkatz »

Two years ago I bought the IPD poly upper torque mount for my new-to-me XC70, it increased cabin vibrations, so I think I actually threw it away along with their poly stabilizer link bushings. I also bought new Hutchinson mounts for the main 3, but since I had wasted $50 on the poly mount I skimped and bought Uro for the top and bottom torque mounts. Both worked fine and the car was smooth for 2 great years. But after my turbo work i had to really work to stop the heat shield from vibrating so I tried modifying the upper link by filling the voids in the upper mount with epoxy. Now I’m back to lots of cabin vibration, and I checked the price of the Hutchinson top torque mount at FCP and it’s gone from $50 to $89! I guess I’ll get the Uro mount again, which held steady at $23.
Unless the Hutchinson is really that much better? Is there some other secret to reducing engine vibration, the kind that goes away in neutral? As I idle into my garage it is like a bonkers Harley Davidson with too many wheels.

Without a part number it is hard to tell which mount you are referring too, is this...

I recall paying $180 for that upper mount.
5 years and doing good so far,
the cheap ones can rip in a few months.

Just remember FCP's lifetime warranty. Pay for new one and send old one back and receive a refund on the original purchase price. You pay shipping for old and they for the new.

?

With everything else costing so much! If you send 2 back at a time and they return 2... Shipping is a lot less.

- Not sure why FCPEuro increaes prices like that, maybe people take advantage of their LT warranty
and keep returning stuff, thus the price increase, just my guess. I don't abuse FCPEuro LT warranty.
I only use their LT warranty for stuff like hood struts or tailgate struts and that is it.
I don't use their LT warranty for brake pads/rotors. But that is just me.

- FCPEuro is not the only vendor.
There are: ebay (just look for who sell it and the brand name bc many ppl sell on ebay: the average person, the junk yard selling used parts, then partsconteinaer etc, Volvo dealer), rmeuropean.com, autohausaz.com etc.

- Right now, if you go to ebay and enter "Hutchinson 30680770", you will see "partscontainer" sells it for $50.

- Likewise, rmeuropean lists:
* Febi brand $25 (when dealing with febi, search forum, it is hit-or-miss in terms of QC.
For this particular item, Febi 30680770 is made in China.
* Hutchinson brand $42, made in Poland.

I think there is a lot more engineering in that mount than I appreciated before. The aftermarkets just fill the metal with a glob of polymer and then you get massive transmission of vibration direct to the front windshield cowl

The OE version, the rubber is not fit or bonded to the metal, the torque is transferred from the friction of the side of the rubber to center bolt. I bet the damping effect of that is huge and important
