P442 (Evap Leak)

Hi Guys! TGIF.
Can anyone give me any tips on what specifically this might be? Just had my local mechanic pull the code for me since my cheap reader did not want to function last evening. I replaced the gas cap about a year ago with a new one so not sure if that gasket goes bad that quickly.
The mechanic just mentioned to me about a possible cracked canister. Not sure where that is located.
Also can you guys recommend for me a reasonably priced code reader for my P2? Thanks much!

The evap system is a large array of hoses and components, any of which could be a failure point. Under your hood there is a diagram of the evap system. You can start by visually inspecting the hoses. A common one is the hose tree with check valves near the purge valve on the intake manifold. The best way to troubleshoot this issue is using a smoke machine.

Or in my case, p0442 was my airbox to turbo hose, tb to intercooler hose, bad purge valve, and the entire hose tree i mentioned above. Along with a break in the hard line from the purge valve to charcoal canister. Fun times.

I don’t know anything about the evap leak, but I own this $115 iCarSoft i906 code reader:

It works ok. If I had known about the V2 version I think I would have bought it instead, for only another $30

I don’t know anything about the V2 version but it allows for electric brake actuation in newer cars, so maybe it can actuate some solenoids and sensors too. Maybe it can even actuate the purge valve?

In general it’s been useful. I was able to diagnose a broken wire to my RPM sensor, see which wheel had a broken reluctor ring for the ABS, determine that I was driving with faulty fuel injectors, see that the AOC pump was producing zero pressure, and reset the SRS light in my car, plus I was able to quickly see which coil had failed in my dad’s car. Way easier than exploratory mechanical surgery.

VIDA on a USB stick, use with any laptop with 8MB memory.$100
mongoose JRL cable interface (same as DICE unit) $100.
Just configure the laptop to boot up from the USB drive if its plugged in at start up.

WIN 10 is installed on the USB drive and the laptop boots up from that system.
VIDA doesn't just read codes, it is bidirectional, you can activate many of the systems from the laptop, it has repair procedures, parts diagrams etc.

But if you own other cars VIDA can't help with those, its volvo only.
