Buick Olds and Pontiac shared the basic architecture, but the Buick heads were different from the others. At the end of the run GM sold tooling and world rights to Rover, which merged with Leyland.

The Nailhead is a different animal altogether; cast iron block and heads.volvolugnut wrote: ↑16 Oct 2022, 18:04Interesting engine story. See Nailhead Buick engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V8_engine.

On closer reading, I see the Buick Small Block 215 is not considered a NailHead engine. But it is the engine used by Rover.foggydogg wrote: ↑16 Oct 2022, 18:36The Nailhead is a different animal altogether; cast iron block and heads.volvolugnut wrote: ↑16 Oct 2022, 18:04Interesting engine story. Correct, but British Leyland changed the casting technique to minimize core shift, which was a big issue for GM aluminum engines in the late '50s. Unfortunately it was a lesson they forgot when the Vega came along.

And As I understood it, over time the Rover casting accuracy got worse, walls were too thin, porosity, slipped liners - all the legendary Land Rover reliability issues of the 80s and 90s (plus Lucas electrics and fuel injection). My son's LR3 has a fantastic Jaguar V8 that is such a solid engine, after going through a RR Classic and Discovery with....issues.
That 215 / 3.5 was like the British small block Chevy - they put it in everything! Either stock, or project swaps. MGB V8s, you name it. A lot of aftermarket performance improvements over the years.
When I was a teen, a father and son down our alley must have had a salvage license, as they were always bringing home projects to re-do/re-build/swap. An Olds 455 with FWD transaxle into the back of a 911, crazy projects. They brought home a Triumph Stag V8 which had blown up (surprise). I learned that the Stag didn't use the 215 (why??) but was two Triumph fours machined into a V8. It had terrible oiling in the crank and the bearings always failed. These guys found a real Buick 215 at the salvage yard, swapped it into this Stag, with a Rochester 4 barrel and custom exhaust. It sounded so good and went like stink!

Pre-bud up to $1,125 now. They didn't list the insurer; the 'actual' number shown may be due to a stated value policy limit. Hope the poor thing lands on its feet.

I thought I read Allstate on one of those forms. I sent the link to Volvo Relix in Portland - they know all the NW Volvo guys and he was going to send the link around.

I just checked to see if they post a final selling price, and there's a "Buy Now" button with $2300. Does that make any sense? Did it not make some insurance reserve?
