The owner's manual doesn't really give special instructions for reconnecting the car battery except afterward to lock and unlock the doors a number of times with the remote. Yet I've read a number of times about the need to put the key in position II before hooking up the battery cables.
The articles or comments about having the key in pos II mention something to the effect of avoiding damaging some modules. If that's the case, does anyone know how it prevents the damage to the modules and why Volvo didn't include that in the owner's handbook...

I suspect it is a safety feature more than the theorized component protection. If airbags deploy due to some sort of SRS work being done incorrectly, you’re well out of harm’s way.
I still follow the urban legend religiously and connect it in pos2, but I doubt it is absolutely necessary.

I see the subject of replacing the little thermistor in the climated module gets a lot of ink online, some have "suggested" I guess, that it got damaged by connecting the battery without having the key in POs II.
I do hope it's just a myth as I've disconnected/reconnected the battery on my XC70 quite a few times recently, and didn't do the key thing...

I started disconnecting/connecting battery without the Position II process long before I read about need to use Position II for removal/connection. I have never had a problem ignoring Position II.
I always disconnect negative cable first and connect negative cable last. This process is also recommended on my Mercedes and Smart cars.
