Sorry, I don't know the nomenclature of the turbo. I've been looking for a diagram that identifies the various parts. I can easily see two from the top, one is a hard plastic purple tube with a rubber elbow, the other is a rubber vacuum line, but I can only see the bottom one from below. Is it possible the a part on the turbo is leaking other than these hoses?

I built a home-made one once per a DIY write-up, with a smoldering oily rag in a 1-gallon paint can and some drilled holes and hoses. They said to use clear tubing, which got soft when it got hot, then kinked, then the paint can lid blew off BOOM!

That's funny....and that's one reason why I chose to buy one. Sourcing all the parts and building the smoke machine seems like a lot more time than I wanted to devote, and then the risk of something going wrong would exacerbate the problem. I paid about $120.00 and I think it was worth it, leaving me more time to frustrate myself working on my car.

This is for the 850's, but yours should be about the same.

Thank you Sveedy, I located the diagram but was unable to place an image in this reply. The area where the smoke seems to be leaking is above the hose connection of #17, the red hose. The #17 hose connection does not appear to be leaking, but I see hose #20 above it and I'm wondering if the smoke is leaking out of the device it's connected to. Hose #20 does not appear to be leaking either. Can you tell me what the device is called that Hose #20 is connected to?

That's your Compressor Bypass Valve. Basically a pressure activated diaphragm.

Thank you. I found a Youtube video from Robert DIY, Turbocharger 101, it shows the turbocharger off the car and all the vacuum lines. The smoke was coming from that area near the CBV, which is secured to the turbocharger with 3 bolts. Also, the air inlet tube from the air box connects next to the CBV, that might be where the leak is. But, those places are obscured from view by all the other hoses, etc.

That is indeed a very tight area with a lot of stuff going on. Have you tried getting a small mirror in there? Get as much light as you can too. I'll wear a headlamp, use a flashlight, and even mount small LED lights into tight places to get a clear view.

99TurboBrick, yes I use a headlamp and have a few small mirrors. I just watched a Youtube video about removing the turbocharger. I'm not planning on removing it but some of the things that are in the way of a clear view can be removed for a better look.

My T5 was Hades to remove the CBV on the car but I got it done. Three m6 bolts, 10 mm heads.

You don’t want leaks in the diaphragm as that device pulls the turbo boost off when you lift your foot. That’s important for driveability, so that boost is cut off quickly when you lift.
