Re: 1999 S70 GLT seat and thermostat

Post by 454cid »

So I mentioned awhile back that I felt like I was sitting higher in the S70 than the 850. Someone mentioned the sunroof lowering the inside of the roof. That's true, and I figured Volvo must have adjusted something else too, when transitioning to the S70. However, I keep getting annoyed because just about every time I get in the car I'm hitting my head, and I'm not even 6'! So started messing around with the controls again. Apparently the contacts are dirty, or something, as the power seat controls seem to be a bit wonky. I finally got the seat down, so it doesn't feel like sitting on a bar stool anymore, but now forward and backward aren't really working.

I did get the thermostat swapped Tuesaday. Now the engine heats up. The needle on the gauge seems to be just a bit shy of horizontal. The 850 is a bit above horizontal. I re-used the original torx bolts, as I did on the 850. I was very careful with that rear bolt as my torx socket was at an angle due to it hitting the head. I don't recall having that issue with the 850. When cleaning out the holes with Brakleen, I noticed the holes go all the way through. I think the holes on the 850 were blind. I put anti-seize on them and torqued them to 13.x NM.

The old thermostat isn't completely shut when cold, but still not open very far. I would have thought that it would heat up better. The opening is a larger diameter than the new Motorad I put in. The Motorad doesn't have the jiggle valve, but I didn't seem to have an issue with trapped air.

Unlike the 850 the S70 top end, under the plastic ignition/plug cover, was (is) filthy. I didn't have time to remove the coils so I just blew it out with air..... pieces of corrugated plastic wire loom, mouse turds, and whatever. The timing belt looked decent so I'll leave it be for a while. The engine has two issues that will require some research on my part before dong the belt.... it should be a mechanical tensionor, and it's got variable valve timing on the exhaust. which I didn't have to deal with on the 850.

I drove it to work Tuesday for the first time....decided to punch the throttle at one point. I started to make the jump to light speed, but traction control kicked in :D

This is what I bought. Hopefully it works.

Or the motor itself could be suspect. If ambient noise is low enough, you should hear a couple clicks when you work the switch in the door.
I have used junkyard motors with good luck; looks like the solenoid is NLA from Mother,

I can hear a click, but I think it's a relay up front. I'll try the new latch without it being attached to the door, so hopefully I can reach in there with a pick and manually release it, so I don't end up with a locked fuel door of my own doing.

Isn't there a release handle of some sort in the trunk? You may have to pull down the inner cover. Dr. Abscate may have some insight here, my wagons are different.

There is a pull handle on an 850 but not on the S/V70 unfortunately. I modified the V70 one with the help of an 850 metal pull wire. The fitments are still there in the frame for the plastic retainer the 850 uses.

I knew about the handle on the 850, as it's been mentioned to me a few times. I assumed the S70 to be the same, so you guys are saving me from chasing the non-existent handle. I fixed the issue another way.... I filled up with gas, so now if I install the new latch and the release doesn't work, I have time to fix it! Now, if only my order would arrive. It was supposed to be here two days ago. It's finally been rescheduled to the 18th (today).

While filling up with gas, I did remove the broken latch.

Although a bit of a faff to remove the motor, it is not too hard to do, but you have to remove the RHS inner trunk side panel to get to the motor. It is held on by 2 Torx screws from the outside under the fuel flap. It is helpful to have someone help to re-align when re-fitting.

I have been chasing a fuel flap release issue on a friends 98 V70 (the one I added the manual 850 pull release to). I eliminated the wiring from the door A pillar to the motor, the motor and the switch on the door. My conclusion is the wire harness from the door switch to the A-pillar is bad where they break random wires on the flexi part from exiting the door to the A-pillar connector.

I pulled another door harness and have to get time to access the car and fit it (I have already checked the wires are good and buzzed it out.

With the price of gas replacing the $2 plastic latch on the S/V70 barely dents the cost of a new tank each time….

Well... My parts arrived. The Volvo coolant didn't leak, thankfully.

Unfortunately, the fuel door release doesn't seem to be working. There is a couple issues with it. First the new catch doesn't seem to want to snap into the fuel door, and it take some effort to close and latch. The original took some doing to remove, so it could be that I just need to work with it, when I'm not freezing cold in the snow. Second, the release doesn't seem to do anything. I can hear a relay, but no action at that door. I popped the trunk, and found that the fastener that holds the side carpet in place was already removed, suggesting someone got in there to release the door.

For now, I'll let the fuel door flop.... too snowy and cold to worry about it.

I did find the case of water I bought last week.... I thought it was in the trunk of the 850.
