2002 V70 2.4t - what do we think to these cracked bushes?

Post by Willber »

Hello everyone,

Ive been tracing an oil leak from timing belt side (I think cam seal as the leak is behind rear timing cover) and in doing so also inspected my wishbone bushes.

I noticed a small crack on the lower side - this is with the car on ramps so the suspension is compressed.

I have a slight wobble in steering wheel at low speed and a low bassy vibration at high speeds (which I think is the driveshaft - and I have a used OEM replacement to try against the aftermarket one which i replaced to before)

I also have a slight grabbing during braking, not a shimmy as such but when the brakes sort of pulse slowly as if they're catching at one point more than the other.

I also have odd clunks and knocks occasionally over bumps and generally poor handling under braking and uneven roads - the car pulls around quite a bit and pulls to the left - im told alignment is OK after 4 wheel check.

Are these bushes bad enough to cause any of that? Theyre aftermarket cheapo arms (serves me right)

Im considering changing the car due to oil leak, gearbox is a bit clunky on/off throttle after slowing down (have B4 servo to try) and generally fancy something a bit more modern (perhaps a P3 model) it also needs a new air con compressor as its noisy!

Thanks for any advice

jack the car up and let the wheels hang down, then you can really see the bushings, it will be obvious if you can see the metal in the rubber showing through.

You just really described all the issues with my Volvo one by one. Small knocks over bumps are made by shocks I'd think.

Theyre not showing metal thats for sure, so I think they will be OK for the UK MOT.

Everything else on the front end is new, so im unsure why I still have odd clunks, strangely more when it is wet! I think the aftermarket driveshaft may be the vibration source
