Turbo stopped working 2001 V70 T5 Auto

Post by azureblue »

After dark of course - car is running great, Turbo working as always, and I made a gas stop. I started the car, it kind of burped after the engine started, and the check engine light came on. And the turbo quit working. No noises, rattles, etc., the car runs fine otherwise. Once I got home, a quick look under the hood by flashlight didn't show anything obvious like a loose hose, but in the dark I could have easily missed one. At least, the hose to the waste gate was easy to see and it's still in place, and the 3 hoses to the control valve are all in place, and the CV is plugged in. . I started the car up, it started fine, but the check engine light is still on. And for some reason, the cruise control doesn't work.. I will look at it again in the morning. If it is something simple like a blown off or cracked hose, I can fix that. After that, I guess it will be off to the auto parts shop for a code read... Ideas?

Thanks

It will not boost. And no whine.. After owning 4 turbo cars, I have a good sense of that turbo kick..
I used to have "built" Saab 99T. I miss that 3500K RPM kick in the pants.. My 740T had a good kick, and my '95R V70 had some nice boost.

The car started just fine this morning - short idle to 1K , then drop down to about 750, and a smooth idle. No rattles or odd noises, but the check engine light is still on. The 3 small turbo controller hoses are dry rotting. I could not trace where two of them went to, but the one to the wastegate is on solid. Wiring to the controller valve is good. I have another set of turbo controller hoses, but I don't want to go replacing without knowing that will fix the problem.

The valve I'm referring to is the one that clips onto the Air box..

I found thsi thread

viewtopic.php?t=41284

But the vid it refers to doesn't show the turbo end of the hoses, and the photo doesn't look like my TCV...

Back from getting the codes read - I got a P1238 - Turbo Control Valve. Does this mean what it says, or is it indicating some thing like an air leak? - I looked for that, already..

Also got a P1171 Fuel Adapters bank?

I need a new code list - mine doesn't show either of these codes...

so taken together, it could be an air leak? Time to take a closer look. The turbo spins up, partially, which is odd, since last night.

It could easily be a simple induction path leak. Once the ECU detects that it will inhibit boost so that’s your. ‘ turbo failure’

Thanks - Rule 1 - make sure the clamps are tight. :-)

After a bit of reading, I realized both codes could be caused by an air leak. I checked the cross over to Air cooler line and found a loose clamp at the air cooler end, and evidence of blow by. Since the hoses are old, they didn't fit tightly. So, I replaced the clamp. I am going to clear codes and see if that solved the problem. If it does, time to order a new set of intake hoses..
