Yeah not a bad idea. I'll have to get another one at some point. Now that i know how to test them i could test the new one to make sure that one works too.

That, or you just grab a spare JY relay or two and replace the capacitors in them and keep as spares. I did about 6 a while back and keep an extra in both of the 850s.
Oh yes, repair a second one that's interesting. I think i may have a problem though because the junk yards in this area seem to have gone away. I'll have to check and see if we even have anymore around here. We had too really great ones about 8 miles from there but they both sold out and are gone now. Another one just 2 miles from here, gone about 6 years or more ago. Really a shame.
The two about 8 miles from here were really really big too, many different old cars. Got parts for my 1988 Hyundai there several times and for other cars in the past too. Really sad to see them go.

Yeah i will have to make one of those up. I think i have the connectors needed to plug into the socket already too and have a crimp tool also. That relay sure is hard to pull out of the socket though isnt it.

Got a set of alligator jumper leads long ago from a place called "BG Micro" and another set from "Electronic Gold Mine" but both sets were faulty. The alligators on both ends were not soldered onto the cheap very thin wires. They have to be completely redone with new wires.
Oddly enough, the third set i got from Radio Shack many years back works OK.
I got many other parts from BG Micro though that were perfect, including high current MOSFET's and special high current Schottky diodes and many other parts too numerous to mention. All of them were good, just these jumper leads are complete junk cant even squeeze them well enough to open the 'mouth' enough to grab on to anything much because the alligator boots are too stiff and too tight around the alligator clip. The Electronic Gold Mine set has half like that too, the other half open ok, but the resistance of each wire is so high they can't be used for much until the wire is soldered onto the clip, and really the wire should be replaced also they look like #26 AWG which is crummy for jumper leads, min should be #22 AWG really. I might even go with #20 AWG instead. Funny they used silicone insulation wire too which is great for jumper leads, but one thing they forgot apparently and that is that they have to actually WORK (ha ha).

Ok off to do some soldering and crimping today :-)

Also had a beer last night first time in probably almost a year or more so a little 'hung' over this morn gonna take a while to get going today :-)

Hello again,

I think i mentioned before the entire relay circuit could be replaced with an 8 pin microcontroller.
It would really take that plus a filter cap to filter the supply voltage and a cheap 5v regulator and a resistor and small transistor. That would be it though. Of course the physical internal relay would have to stay unless replaced with a MOSFET. None of this stuff is expensive though. Probably $5 USD for everything.

Well, now that i have it working and i know the circuit now, i was thinking of doing this just for the fun of it anyway. To think of it, imagine that entire circuit replaced with those 6 parts, on a very small circuit board. It would be cool to see it working like that.
All the circuit does besides drive the coil of the relay is detect a pulse and use a delay for the coil shut off. Delays and pulse detection is super simple in even a $1 microcontroller. Could even install an override function to test the fuel pump, maybe a push button switch on the case so the user could press it, or even wire up a remote switch so the user could press it without even taking that pesky fuse cover off.

Maybe what i could do is look around for a non working relay and break that apart and put the new circuit in and test it..
If anyone knows where i could get one please let me know. I could call the junk yards around here but since there is so few now i doubt they would have that part.

Are you set up to to lay out and fabricate circuit boards? Or do you have vendors for that whom you've worked with?

I think this should have at least a Bluetooth interface , if not a 5G interface so we can test it remotely.

Let us know the timeframe for product release. Will it be on sale for Black Friday?

I did all that in the past just not for some time now, but i could get something started again if there was enough interest in it. Maybe a short production run.

I would probably want to test it extensively in my own car and under some extreme conditions too first. I think it could actually be more reliable because reliability has a lot to do with the shear number of connections. The circuit as is has a lot of connections on the little board i know i had to trace through each one and find out where each connected to (ha ha). The uC version would have far fewer connections.
The chip they use is not anything special either, not military grade or anything. If i did one myself i could look into a mil spec chip which would have a higher temperature range rating (both colder and hotter endurance).

But you think enough people would be interested in this to make it worth doing a small production run? If so, how many pieces?
Also, i wonder if anyone would want to mod their own with the new board or else i'd have to get a bunch of old relays and mod myself, or else just get the bottom connector and built up a new entirely new relay. Just thinking about it long term.

Would you happen to know where i could get a bottom connector for that relay so i can start with that?
If there was a 'raw' relay that fits it that could help too i could mod a regular type Volvo relay as long as it is cheaper and has the same bottom connector. With the mechanical relay already inside, that would make it much simpler too i could use that with the new uC chip. That would make up a new fuel pump relay.

Well if we get too complicated it gets less reliable. The way i understand BT and automobiles right now is that they seem to have a lot of trouble connecting and staying connected, or is that with just the cheap stuff?
i was thinking maybe it has something to do with the ignition firing as that generates a lot of EMI which may be what interferes with the normal BT connections. Dont have a lot of experience there yet though just going by what i read and what people tell me that have used or tried to use BT with their ODBII testing.
I think we could come up with a better communication method though one that cant fail unless something really bad goes wrong.

I dont think it could be by Black Friday though that's too soon it has to be tested pretty good before passing on to someone else. I would at the very least test it in my car for a number or weeks i think. If someone else was willing to do some beta testing that would be cool too though, although i would suggest they know enough about this relay to know when it fails to change it out at least.

Let's see how many people would be interested in this new kind of circuit or entire new relay.

I also wonder if i could get a bottom connector to start with, or else i'd have to make up my own connector but that would have to be a one off i think. Better to find a commercially available matching connector bottom so it plugs right in.

Lots of people will be interested, and 99% of them will then buy a new one from FCP with a lifetime warranty.

It's a great academic exercise, but not one that would be financially viable.

Love the detail of the examination. I dont know if a single relay would be worth it. Now im curious to take apart one of the spare lighting relays i have to see what goes into those. I agree with that a microcontroller could streamline a good amount of this process although the necessary protection would be required. This was very similar to a project we did in our first year except it was a voltage controlled frequency generator. In this case its more of a follower that will cutout if the signals do not feed through.

Opened up a light control relay and was not dissapointed at all. Looks to be a lot for what it does. I am curious if it would be possible to make one of these relays with a capability of detecting lower loads from LED bulbs and other systems. I know the grey ones differ as it integrates foglights so rebuilding these relays to handle foglight upgrades would be an interesting project.
