3.7 sticks out like a sore thumb. 3.7! There's just not enough oil to absorb and redistribute all that heat. This oil capacity is the line item of the design that "gave" when something had to give... I'd bet there were some heated (no pun intended) talks when this was on the drawing board all those years ago.

power requirements
weight (but really WxHxD) requirements
cost requirements

"Now go make this work," and they did. As a premium brand I think this was approved, because owners were going to follow service specs at the dealer service department. They weren't releasing these cars to the Great Unwashed masses to DIY oil changes and forgotten/skipped service intervals. (But reality hit the second owners who had budgets, had no 2nd car or loaner, etc.)

That's exactly my view of VW-Audi engineering after all this - amazing ideas, amazing performance in crazy conditions, but no real thought to longevity of those systems, or how to get in there to maintain it. Four systems have to come off to replace the 5th one you're trying to reach.

I fought off my love affair with the GTI forever because of this. Then the dieselgate scandal sunk that boat.

Just for "fun," here's the Audi 4.2 V8 timing chain set-up. This is the transmission side of the engine, not the front. I count one two three four separate chains, with nylon ramps and hydraulic tensioners and VVT. Apparently the ramps wore out.

$1800 estimate to replace the drivers seat airbag module.

Oh, EDIT!.....1800 to replace with a factory part......which is NLA from VW Audi. The dealer won’t, of course, source a used one.

So you’re left with putting an unknown used one in yourself, or leaving it as is with the fault code, with your kid driving it. Nice decision.
