Volvo Repair Database New How-To: Install Spark Plugs 850/S70/V70/C70

Post by matthew1 »

Many thanks to Ajay for his very well done how-to on installing spark plugs!
Super pictures Ajay :D.

The only thing I'd add is on step 7, when you're threading the new plugs in, is to use quarter-inch or eighth-inch rubber tubing to suspend the plugs over the plug holes, then twist the plugs onto the engine block's threads by turning the other end of the tubing. With the tubing, you can't get enough torque to crossthread.

With aluminum blocks like our 850s have, cross-threading spark plugs is easy, and is a big problem if it happens.

Sorry it took a while to get this up .

When I got my 850, it was doing the exact thing you described. I put new NGK Iridium plugs in, new distributor cap and rotor, along with new spark plug wires. It runs much much smoother now. A thing to keep in mind when you're changing the plugs is to make sure you get a very good angle on the torx bolt on the side closest to the firewall, near the intercooler pipe. Whoever had done my plugs before, nearly stripped that one bolt out, which made its removal a big headache.

Good article, but note that on a 2000 or later model you will need 1 more tool: a 10 mm socket to remove each spark plug boot, which is held down by 1 bolt each. a bit of a pain, but oh well.

Your instructions say to hand tighten the plugs. Is that all that is required? Seems unreasonable to me, but if you say its so it must be so.

If it's threading them you're talking about, I wholeheartedly recommend the rubber tube method. It virtually eliminates the possibility of crossthreading.

After you thread them:
you can't really hand tighten them -- you need a socket to turn them at all. Go to "on" plus 1/4 turn.

One thing about the aluminum heads ;slowly back the plugs out and screw them in a bit. Do not just take them out, slowly loosen a bit and tighten a bit until you get it all the way out. Never do this change to a hot head. You will damage the threads for sure.

Step 7
Install the new plug. Hand tighten it a "sufficient" amount.

Dear Ajay

On my V70 XC there is a 2 inch diameter plastic tube running across the engine. It covers two of the T screws that must be taken out to remove the plug cover. Could you elaborate on how this should be done.

Thanks

If you get a 5/8" spark plug socket,(especially for spark plugs), it should have a rubber boot in it which HOLDS the spark plug so you can get it out and also to help thread it in. I put a 6" extension on the spark plug socket and then you don't need the rubber tube. Once you have them threaded in you torque them to 18 ft. lbs. I always put anti seize compound on the threads. Gap is .028
