Parking brake issue - S70 T5M

Status update:

Pulled the rear seat and found one broken connector on the drivers side, zip tied it back in place for now. There were two connectors on the floor on the drivers side but only one on the passenger side and it didn't look like there were ever two on that side, does that sound correct?

Removed wheels and punched rivets and reinstalled brackets to control arms on both sides, readjusted, passenger side works correctly. Drivers side doesn't work at all.

The prior owner paid a shop to replace both cables one year ago but the driver side cable is worn thru from rubbing the tire and the metal casing is rusted. Prior owner was in Los Angeles so seems odd that it has rusted so soon, makes me wonder if the shop really did the work.

Removed drivers rotor to inspect, ton of brake dust on drum side of rotor. Nothing obvious other than when you pull the parking brake handle there is zero movement of parking brake mechanism. When handle is pulled I can feel the tension/movement on the cable right before the cable reaches the bracket on the control arm, so it is moving to that point. Do these cables normally break or does the end mechanism ever just seize up?

Since I don't have a new cable I stopped and didn't remove the shoes and springs. I am thinking of just installing a new cable.

Appreciate any suggestions!

It sounds like a seized rear cable. Take the cable off the adjuster and see if slides in out eadily

They do fail if the sheath is crushed or bent which allows water to enter and then the cable rusts internally. No way I would expect that to happen in a year, especially in LA. I guess anything is possible but unlikely. It is possible the rubbing has caused the cable material to melt and get into the cable. Your description would suggest it has failed and needs replaced. Don't recall there being 2 tie downs on one side but been a while since I did one. Don't think there are different part numbers left and right? Just checked on Volvo parts website. Same part number both sides. Up here they are about $105 (about $80 US each from Volvo dealer on line)

Well, I replaced the drivers side cable today and it was in need of replacement, it was very stiff, not smooth movement at all like the new cable. Had to hammer on the end at the wheel to get it out. No way the shop replaced it before, so the previous owner was just ripped off.

The brakes now work though the passenger side seems to either be all on or all off and it randomly makes a clanging noise when you pull/release the brake. Passenger wheel will lock up as well, I am guessing this cable is hanging up and/or sticking and needs to be replaced.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like it is sticking. Did you dis-assemble the passenger side and give it a look over? The shoes can delaminate.

No, since I didn't have another new cable on hand. Going to drive it a little and see how it works over the next couple of weeks. Most likely will just end up replacing the passenger side cable as well and have an extra set of shoes in case needed. Trying to save the $80 for the cable, lol. Good news is the passenger side will be much faster, having done the drivers side.
