Make External Connections to Ignition Switch?

Hello there,

I might need to make some electrical connections to the ignition switch in my 1998 v70 non turbo FWD.
Is this possible without too much trouble?
If so, what do you take off to get to the switch, and are the connections screw terminals or something else?
If the terminals are hard to work with, are there wires coming from the switch terminals that can be tapped into?

I have a remote engine starter and if it checks out to work good when i test it inside the house with a power supply i may connect it to the car and start using it. There are two or three wires that have to connect to the ignition switch, or wires that come from that switch.

I am thinking that it may work by sort of "hot wiring" the car. I've never had to deal with this before in any of my cars from the past and never had to replace an ignition switch.

Pull the part number off your switch and use it to search this forum. There are a couple of good threads showing the connector disassembled and the plugs, etc. I would tap into the wires outside the switch but that’s me

Ok so how do i confirm the part number? Do i have to take something off the steering column?

Either the Volvo web parts store or FCP, note your chassis number and get the right one of two. I think the earlier one is a grey case and the later is black, but part numbers preclude possible poltergeists

Unless I'm reading this wrong, why not just make your connections further down the harness towards your feet for the remote starter?

Be glad this is the 98 and not the 99+. The newer ones are not kind when it comes to remote starter hookup thanks to the newer style immobilizer.

99% of an autostart is based on experience and the quality of the installation.
If you're asking questions like this, you are in way over your head.
You're hacking the heart of your vehicle - Mistakes can be dangerous.

Find a reputable shop that's comfortable with these older Volvos
and does this kind of work everyday. A Reputable shop.
Contact some Volvo dealers and ask who they recommend.
Not the sales people - The techs and service writers.
Experienced dealership parts people usually know, too.

As for the aftermarket installation shops themselves?
Be prepared to buy a system from them. They'll have
a good handle on the best available gear. They do
this for a living and know what works and what doesn't.
Check out their history and research their reviews.
The good ones will also specialize in high end
security systems and will have been around
for decades. Length of time in business matters.
Look for confident, older techs.

Beware of fast talking youngsters...

Hello,

What exactly is the danger here?
There are about 4 wires that have to connect, maybe 5. Brake, shifter, two or three on the ignition key.

Why do you say this is dangerous though?
