P80 Inspection, service and repair check list

Post by scot850 »

I have started on a check list that came as an idea when working on my friends 98 wagon. Casting an eye over the car made me realise there are a lot of places to check. I have not got close to finishing it yet or perhaps figuring out the best way to present it and make it the most efficient to use. It is on an MS Excel spread sheet and I can share it here and for those who wish to highlight missed items feel free to add them on this thread and I will include them and update accordingly. Once complete it will be available to anyone who wants it, especially those new to P80's to give them an idea what to look for.

Eventually I will add a section on regular servicing tracking with reminders.

Bump!

Just bringing this back up to the top to see if anyone has anything else I should consider adding. I hope to work on this more next week to complete the first working draft and then refine from there.

Any comments, including a waste of time!

I don't think it is a waste of time, but imo this would be most useful with km / mil / age added when these are to be checked, or usually go bad. (With values from community knowledge... haynes manual has some service plan, but meh.)
Just a huge list seems impractical to check. At least I'd be much too lazy.

It is a once a year or new car check list. I have still to add in the regular service stuff with mileage change reminders. Appreciate you taking the time to look it over though.

I took a look at it and thought it looked comprehensive--nothing jumped out as missing to me. I was inspired to go look at my car more closely.

The idea came about now that I have occasionally helped other local owners, but then we also get a number of new to P80 owners who may be able to use this eventually to get to know their cars more fully and areas that may be issues going forward. I wanted to try to make sure I kind of had a full car Stage 0 not just the obvious mechanical service stuff. That way I could give them a comprehensive car condition to plan for maintenance going forward.

Thanks for the input!

Only advice I would add would be a recommendation as to spare parts they may wish to keep on hand... An extra antenna ring and fuel pump relay come to mind...

For AWD - check and replace angle gear and rear diff. oil.
For manual trans - check and replace gear oil

Thanks for the additional items. Hadn't got to the rear of the car too much yet on the AWD, so great info to add.

I hadn't thought about the recommended spares to keep either used or new. That would be a good idea especially as parts for these older cars become harder to find.

Thanks,

Neil.

Nice Check List, good to have everything documented. At a glance I realize after working on cars for a bit you automatically see many on the list while others it's by feel while driving, what you hear and even smell.

It sort of reminds me of the PDI Check List at Acura. We had if I remembered correctly 150 items to check off besides the road test. Should have kept a sheet. I still have left over sticky foam pads for the phone, ac and stereo installation besides reusable zip ties from the kits circa 1995 . Just used the sticky foam pad a couple days ago and it has not degraded / deteriorate and adhesive side sticky as when new.

Imagine, back in 95 AC was still considered extra with a line item added to the cost from the factory to the sticker price. Automatics also had a line item I think of $500. Installed quite a few complete AC units from removing the front apron to lines, compressor, evap, condenser and relays. Factory gave 3 hours to do this including evacuation, adding refrigerant and testing. After 6 months I barely made 3 hours while Tony next to me was consistently 2.5 hours and under .
.
Blessings,

BKM

Glad this came to the fore again. Great list what I can see of it Neil. My iPad is only download1 complete sheet apparently, sheets 2 and 3 are blank for some reason. Could be my device but I was wondering if you can confirm that the download does have 3 pages of items. That would indeed be a comprehensive and helpful list.

All’s been well with the car so I’ve not been poking around looking for issues currently. Hope to get it in the heated garage for some AC work after the holidays and a comprehensive checkup would probably be appropriate at that time. Best with your cataloging projects.
