I may be from NJ, but have lived in NC most of my life at this point. I'm very much used to our weather down here... and this is not a type of cold I've felt in a long time! I swear I was about to freeze solid while pumping gas yesterday lol.
I really don't know how you guys up north survive the winter. I have a cousin that moved to Chicago for college a couple years ago and has stayed there, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. The windchill would make it uninhabitable by my standards.

Have never given thought to this but on the sitting Project 07 S60 the rusting rotors look brand new so do the pads. Do you just drive the rust away and some into the pads or do you remove it with sand paper or some other?

I have one of those sitting around but it looks menacing and might increase the run out considerably due to a lack of precise control.

First time feeling that kind of dry biting wind chill cold here in RTP. Not sure one can be a DIY'er with Chicago type winters unless you have an insulated and heating garage.

I bought Flex Hone for Rotors. Put the rotor on a metal lathe, spin it up slowly, then work the hone over the surface with gentle pressure. This removed pad deposits (from the car sitting too long) which caused vibrations when breaking. I will try this again to remove rusty rotors on the T5M which had been sitting for six years (though the calipers are removing the rust) and my rusty Benz which has been sitting for eight months.
That looks pretty gentle. Come to think of it a wire brush on a drill might be sufficient. I just remembered Discount Tire wire brushes the rim and brake rotor facing not brake surface when putting the rims back on the car.

I have only been fortunate to visit NC once in my life back around 1997 or so in Ashville. We had snow and a rental large Ford Crown Vic with regular tires. It was damp cold which we don't get so much up here so it was cold, but living in Scotland it still felt fine. I do remember the CEO of our company who was our host saying it was not normal to get that weather, but then they said the same when I visited CA in December and we had frost and early snow in the mountains in around 1987. Car we were given to drive by the company was a totally worn out Ford LTD? wagon. That was fun in the snow up in the mountains!

Asheville doesn't get a whole lot of snow, but they certainly get more than we get here in Charlotte. We usually see a dusting once a year. Fine by me, I like snow, but our "snow" is usually a slushy, icy mixture that's just miserable and AWFUL to drive in.
We have very wet winters though. Especially in recent years, it's been very rainy.

There's a guy I watch occasionally on Youtube who works on BMWs in Chicago. I don't know how he does it... seems his coveralls are the answer.
I had to leave my shop after about 30 minutes today because it was just too cold, about 30 inside. And this guy works outside! He's gotta be related to Abscate...

Coveralls are big to stay warm. The physical activity of wrestling the big stuff like tires , struts, suspension keep the blood pumping.

Hat critical

Nitrile gloves keep hands dry, work gloves keep them warm.

I use folded moving blankets to insulate from cold ground

I've used a wick style kerosene heater outside in the winter before. I also used multi short duration work sessions. I had to change a water pump several years ago. I disassembled things in one session, then cleaned old gasket material in another, and re-assembled in yet another.

When you lay your cold chrome wrenches on the top of the heater, make sure they don't sit too long and become branding irons.
