Hi guys
My passenger airbag is coming apart. it looks like it is sealed with a foam type of gasket that is going away due to the heat and age. How do I repair this problem?
'93 850 GLT passenger airbag "flap" coming up
Not sure if I'm misreading your post because your subject line indicates a problem with the dash cover and the rest of your post indicates a problem with the air bag itself...
The flap which covers the opening in the dash is separate from the airbag (You can unbolt the air bag from underneath the dashboard itself). Hopefully someone else will chime in, but I remember reading somewhere way back about using a hairdryer to heat up the covering itselt and stretching it out a bit so that the little tabs will slide back into their holes and hold it in place.

Total replacement of the "cap" is what I've heard is the only real option that is long lasting. It comes in three colors. These are for '95 and earlier w/ part numbers:
Grey: 9195025
Blue: 9195027
Beige: 9195029
I also found these numbers in VADIS but don't know how they really correspond:
Cover Plate Grey 9192798
Cover Plate Blue 9192799
Cover Plate Beige 9192800
And then this (I think numbers that the originals were changed to):
>>9192798 (272321)
>>9192799 (272322)
>>9192800 (272323)
If you look at the www.foreigncarpartsonline.com website and put in any of the above numbers nothing comes up (when it usually does for a genuine Volvo part). Let me suggest that you copy this post and take the numbers down to the dealer to see what they can do for you. The official name is Airbag "Cover Plate."
Good luck and let us know how things go.

I'm going to take a photo of the problem so you can see what I am talking about. It's just the black rubber that covers the airbag deploy compartment coming off. It has a seal around it that looks like foam.
Update: OK here is the problem. it's coming apart. Has anyone ever fixed this before?

Well, while looking around, I found this link. I think it covers my problem

Great idea. I'm thinking (and listed part numbers for) the rectangular cover on the dash on the passenger's side.

I just replaced the whole dashboard. Got tired of trying to find a solution for a problem that shouldn't be to begin with. Much easier and cheaper than buying the plate for me. (I have a parts car.) Why make a cover that's prone to shrinkage? Just one of those things that I just don't get, I guess. BTW, the nuts on the back of the airbag are reverse security nuts. Tried the vise grip way of removal, but it just didn't work on some of them, which was the reason I gave up that route in the first place. Is there a better way of removing the plate? I can practice with my old dash that has curled.

It is less of an issue with the material than it is with the adhesive. Volvo decided to be "Green" in their manufacturing processes years ago and use environmentally friendly adhesives and plastics. That is why all of the plastic parts break and the stuff that is supposed to stick doesn't.Why make a cover that's prone to shrinkage? Just one of those things that I just don't get, I guess.
I love to be environmentally friendly but I love even more when stuff stays glued down and doesn't deteriorate.

OK so let me see if I understand this right. This flap can be permanently glued down? It appeared to me that the foam seal had a purpose. By visual inspection it appeared that when in tact the flap, in an accident would separate and allow an air bag to deploy. Is this incorrect? That is why I have not glued it down myself, I believed that it was a breakaway flap that needed to be to factory specs in order to be safe. So where does the passenger air bag deploy if not from that top hole?

It pops out from behind the cover that's curling up. From the bottom, as the hinge is on the top, if my memory serves me correctly (it could be the other way, but I don't think so). If the flap, or cover separated, I would think it would hit you square in the face or chest, which would not be good, given the force of deployment. I have a friend that happened to when the sensor went off by itself in a Prelude. BTW, isn't it funny that a car that costs $20-$30k new has plastic parts deteriorating in 5 yrs? Like my center console that I had to replace? oh well
