Yeah, I thought maybe it was to relieve tension in the belt by allowing it to slip a bit, since the water pump doesn't need to be timed. That's just a wild guess and is probably wrong.

No it is not missing teeth. For some reason it has that gap but who knows why? No panic!

I have seen a water pump like that before, but I do not remember where. My guess is the water pump does not require great torque, so the manufacturer saved a bit of machining of cog teeth.

Check the water pump brand. If is is not Aisin (OEM) or Volvo you may want to consider changing it.

Yep, a lot of these water pumps are like that. No idea why, but it's normal.

The car doesn't look too bad! Definitely needs some interior parts, but nothing crazy. That stuff shouldn't be TOO hard to source, but it won't be too easy to remove all the plastic without it shattering into a million pieces.

As for the shifter, the worst part about the ball seat is actually removing it without damage. If anyone previously tried to remove the shift knob, then it can easily be damaged from the upward jerks. Fortunately you're past that part if it's broken. I also recommend replacing these bushings at the time, the rubber can wear out as foggydogg mentioned. https://www.snabb.us/delrin-shifter-ass ... -1999-m56/
For the bushings, I highly recommend the skate bearings. Those have the best feel, and won't cause the shifter cables to bind and potentially bend. The other option is these spherical bearings https://www.bneshop.com/collections/p80 ... t-bearings

I'm going to have to shove my bore camera down there and try to see the casting marks. Because I do wonder if it was any good. PO said timing was done 40k ago. They used Volvo branded belts, so I hope they used a Volvo pump.

Yeah the ball seat is definitely broken. But now I'm worried about breaking the shift knob during disassembly. Still haven't got a dealer to call me back and confirm I can actually get a ball seat.

Finished up picking at the salvage yards. Of course now that I'm not looking for beige interior, that was all I could find. Grabbed 2 good powered seats, drivers door, pass mirror, heater core someone penned as replaced in 2021, rear hatch and roof rails from an XC, Volvo rear window shades, a rough console with mint wood inlay, and a bunch of miscellaneous other stuff. Now waiting on a new TCV after I broke a barb off while replacing hoses and vacuum lines. Always something.

That could be an original pump, getting a look at the front for evidence of ID isn't a bad idea. At over 300k, one would hope it isn't the one it was born with. The tensioner looks a bit crusty though.
I was able to get the ball cup over a year ago, ordered through a local-ish dealer, may be scarce now ?

Big updates for tonight. Successfully plumbed in my salvaged heater core and bypassed the firewall coupler. Finally have hot heat! While I was in their, I replaced the turbo vacuum lines. Had to replace the TCV as one of the ports crumbled into dust. Noticed all the rubber lines look pretty iffy. I think a PCV service will be in my near future. There's definitely an oil leak on top of the turbo. The CBV is caked in old oil and dirt.

Installed a new driver's seat that actually moves. I forgot what a good seat feels like. It's heaven. And it's perma installed for now. One of the welded nuts broke off under the floor as I was tightening the bolt. Tightening is a bit of a strong word, as it was barely half threaded!

Replaced the tattered Volvo branded air filter and discovered one of the box clips is missing that hides under the fuse box.

And lastly I learned the low coolant warning light is not operational. Unfortunately I did not learn this until after taking a 20 minute trip, but it's well below freezing outside. Gauge never went above 3 o'clock. I hate how hard it is to get the air out of this cooling system.
