They were in a you-pull-it in Pittsburgh. Fortunately they were on my way and I had 4 hours to kill. It's funny about the AWD P80s. I tried desperately hard to give away my S70 AWD parts car. But no one wanted anything to do with it then.

For some reason I kept myself up at night deciding what oil to use for the upcoming change. PO has been using Castrol GTX 10w30 changed religiously every 3k miles. My time on the forum tells me synthetic only changed ever 5-6k miles. But my recent run ins with engine failures makes me wonder if I shouldn't go back to conventional changed ever 2-3k miles...

3k mile OCIs is a good way to ensure the oil stays clean, which is crucial to keeping an engine running for the long run. Synthetic oil is probably still a safer bet on these engines, but I know plenty have used conventional without any issues.

With the new API SP and SN+ certifications targeting newer fuel efficient GDI and turbo engines, I do wonder if it really matters anymore if you are changing your oil every 5k or sooner. Though I was shopping online and Castrol GTX at the farm store is $22 and the big 4 synthetics are all in the $27-30 range, so not really a big price difference either. Can't say I'm excited to discover where all the leaks are though.

I have 2 Turbo 855s with over 200.000 miles and conventional oil replaced every 9.500 miles (15.000k) as per European standard, and they all run fine. Both of them didn't like synthetic oil, startet weeping oil. I'll stick with conventional oil (except for track days, maybe).

I feel like the standards for European conventional oil are a lot higher than in NA. Ended up buying Mobil Super 5000 cause it was on sale. Trying not to overthink it. I got plenty more over thinking to do elsewhere.

Fitted a boost guage today so I can get a handle on how well she's running and how much boost it's making.

Fitted the brand new TYC headlights I picked at the junkyard. The reflectors we're the worst I've ever seen in what I'm assuming were the original headlights.

I changed out the ATF in the power steering pump, which quieted it up quite a bit.

Need to get a handle on the stumbling and lack of power at idle. She comes back alive at 2000rpm. Not sure if it was the wet roads, but over 6lbs of boost and she started jerking again (fuel pressure?).

Worried about the alternator. This morning the battery light stayed on for a few minutes. Was getting flickering dash lights. Then at over 4k rpm, the battery light will come back on. AutoZone tested it and said everything was fine. Tired alternator, bad ground, voltage regulator (all of the above)?

Formulated a new short term todo list:
- replace the crumbly vacuum hoses and elbows
- replace the glass in the pass mirror
- replace the upper expansion tank hose
- ignition service
- fuel filter
- cabin filter
- hunt down the growling pulley
- replace upper torque mount

Did you replace the ignition stuff yet? That will certainly cause the stumbling. My cousin's 98 was doing the same thing. Every time that went over about 2 psi of boost, it would start misfiring.

What is the history on the timing belt and components and the serpentine belt?

PO said timing was done ~45k miles ago. The hydraulic tensioner and roller look a bit rusty, so I don't think they were changed (or maybe they were, the salt is bad here). Serpentine belt is brand new Volvo. The timing was done at least twice prior. Found 2 faded timing stickers.

I think I might do the timing service for piece of mind, but boy are these timing parts getting expensive.

Not yet, that's this week's task. Also need to do vacuum lines. They are all in very bad shape. Found 2 elbows that are almost split.

Felt like working late tonight, so replaced the passenger side mirror glass. Swapped out the black cap for a green one on the expansion tank. And started digging into the accessory drives.

Also found this hose sitting in front of the battery tray. Assuming it's for the smog pump or cruise control? Maybe the evap system?

Most likely cruise control, the motor sits under the battery tray.
