1990 volvo 240 DL when to shift light

my volvo is a standard transmission 90000 miles with a light that used to come on when it is time to shift --now it is constantly blinking--can any one tell me where or what is the sensor the operates it? i am about to remove the dash and try to remove the bulb--the blinking light is a little pest--the light i located next to the bulb warning light at the right side of the instrument panel

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The Shift Indicator Control Unit is under the left side of the dash above the fuse box.

This shows the locations of all the relays inside the passenger compartment:

You don't need to remove the dash to access the bulbs, just take out the instrument panel.

Disconnect the battery negative lead having found the radio code if it needs one.
Pull off the rheostat and light switch control knobs.
Carefully remove the covers on both sides of the instrument panel.
Remove 4 screws holding the instrument panel in place.
Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Refitting is the reverse of the above.

Thank you for such a fast response--now i am ready for the blinking light battle--this forum has been a great help with some of my other volvo problems--such as information about mass air meter, fuel pressure regulator and the cruse control switch on the break pedal that i thought was the break light switch

What did you ever find out about your shift light?
My bulb doesn’t even light up so I’m hoping it’s just the bulb. But if not, I’d love some context on what you did to repair yours.
