As I was in the car fixin' mood (resolved a bunch of items on our Honda Odyssey yesterday) I tested my evap canister purge valve. No clicking so maybe this is the root cause of my persistent P0442 (EVAP Control System Leak Detected Small Leak)? FCP has 'em reasonably priced. Also noticed that the rubber line that goes from the intake manifold to the PCV device beneath the manifold has cracks in it. I think I just used a piece of fuel injection rated hose for that when I replace the PCV canister about 3 years ago.

This morning it was 11 below zero F here. I'd rather just stay inside. But my wife needed to go somewhere on her day off, and Betty the Volvo wouldn't start. I eskimo'd up, dragged an extension cord to the curb, and hooked up the HF charger. Ran a couple three hours, said it was "repaired." I checked with a multimeter at the engine compartment hot, and it read 12.7 something volts. Not great, maybe ok if it's warmer. It only get short trips a mile to work or groceries, so that isn't good for it, plus the cold we've had.

I drove her to the store just in case, topped up gas, started right back up, left it running until she was done. I should dig into the trunk to see when we bought this one.

-11 F will bring any weak battery to its knees. If it’s over 5vyears old in those climates, it’s time* to replace it, especially if it’s a short trip car.

Just replaced the 2015 vintage battery in my 2004! Turns out you can fit a group 49 battery in these cars-- 1100 cold cranking amps should do the trick, even here in the Great White North...

Had fun at the beach.

I also broke it :( Came down a steep dune too fast and broke the radiator, also bent in intercooler and the a/c radiator, so they're probably bad. I'm out of town in central coastal California. Can anyone recommend a mechanic around these parts?

I would recommend a welder after mechanic finishes your repair.

Was motivated twice to weld this thing. First time after crashing in wilderness with no cell coverage (luckily the subframe took most of the hit, the radiators were only bent). Second time hit a bear way up north in Quebec. Again, no cell coverage, no traffic on weekends, closest settlement is 200 miles away.

That's awesome. I was thinking the same thing, basically a frame with a screen like yours, or four thick tubes curving down in front, almost like a football helmet face guard.

I found a shop who can fix me up. Should be on the road again soon, but will probably stick to the coast for now :)
