Volvo 850 Wagon Engine Light

Post by dlpizzle »

Someone at work is offering me a 1996 Volvo 850 Wagon with 120000 miles for $3500. I checked KBB and it's a good deal on the surface. One thing that concerns me is that the engine light is on. Would taking it to a local Firestone for a visual check up unveil any problems associated with that? Regardless, if I were to pull the trigger on this deal, I would want it checked out and it's well worth the $20 for my peace of mind. How worried should I be? The owner states that he's done all the major maintenance. What else should I be looking for in general and specifically for this model? Any help would be most appreciated.

Reading OBDII Codes, 1997 and newer
...even though your's is a 96 is should be OBDII.

$3500 is a low, low price.

Thanks for the info. I called firestone and they won't do the reading unless it's part of a engine diagnostic that will run me $79. I called the local Volvo dealer and they would charge $96 if I don't have any repairs done. WTF, is this normal or did they just see me coming?? I can't justify spending $100 just to check out a car. Any alternatives? I can't buy the car unless I know what's going on with that light. ARRGH.

Try local Pep Boys, Shucks or whatever your corporate/franchise auto parts store is in your city.

Thanks for your help. I called Pep Boys and they said they'll get the codes from the car for $20. I will post an update for anyone interested. Hopefully, it's something minor. Thanks again for your help Matt.
