2007 S60 Can Bus Com Errors after TPMS Service

Post by mikestr »

Hello friends. I must call upon you once more for advice. Upon seeing a dash light warning me that the tire pressure monitoring system in my S60 was faulty I booked an appointment to diagnose the problem. Their scanner found that one sensor was bad. As the set s original to the car and thus over 15 years old I decided to have all four replaced at a tire store (America's Tire, same company as Discount Tire). When the installation was finished I saw two workers fiddling for some time with a scanner plugged into the OBDII port, discussing something with a look of concern. One of them came out and said that they couldn't get the warning light to turn off. In retrospect this seems stable inasmuch as (I've read) that no action is needed, only time for the system to relearn.

Shortly after this service the SRS warning light came on as well. The error given by my iCarSoft Vol 2.0 was 00E7 "CAN signal missing." I cleared the code; the TPMS warning later went out on its own. But the SRS did return, repeatedly, and each time it was accompanied by the TPMS light. Additional codes were found:

CEM: 9C03 "Antenna/light ring: Signal missing"

ABS: Faulty wheel sensor signal

SAS: no communication from module

Outside temperature monitor faulty

There was also a fault in the auto system--sub-amplifier antenna--whatever that is. Dome lights and key fob stop working. I've seen the STC light come on a ew times. The two warnings that consistently come together are for the airbag and TPMS errors. So long as it's warm outside, these and other error messages (except for the missing light ring signal) can be cleared and the lights stay off until late at night, when the temperature drops.

These symptoms occur when it is cold, by our local standards, which means below about 10 C and guaranteed to occur at 0 C.(50 and 32 F for my fellow citizens). I have no idea whether or how the incident at the tire store and this temperature-correlated spate of errors are related. If this hadn't occurred right after the TPMS service I might think this is just a poor, likely corroded connection between the CEM and one or more modules. But the thing and the fact that the TMPS error continues to figure so prominently in this, always coming with the airbag warning even when no other warnings are given, makes me think there is actually still a problem in the TPMS system that is causing the loss of CAN signal to the SRS and other modules, and that this is possibility is not excluded by the sensitivity to temperature. But these are hunches, as I have no knowledge and no system diagrams.

Any suggestions where to start? Find someone who has VIDA-DICE and knows how to use it?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, VIDA is a requirement to troubleshoot something like this. If the CanBus was interrupted during service the SRS can have a logged fault which can only be cleared in VIDA. If it logs enough faults to overflow , you can really have trouble clearing it.

Total tech in San Jose might be good guys to talk to

Can I ask if you also have a recommendation for mechanical work in this region? I'm north of SF, about an hour, but I can go as far as San Jose if the work can be completed in a day. I would like to find a shop who is willing to replace the shift solenoids in my transmission without insisting on a complete overhaul.

That's very close, but I don't think we have anyone trustworthy here, so I can go farther, even Sacramento.

There is a small Volvo Ma and Pa if I recall in Santa Rosa. My brother moved from there about 6 months ago. I will try to get the name of them or if there is anyone else in the are he can suggest.

Thanks, Neil. I have patronized two independents and the dealer there, with mixed results. Routine repairs, fine. Anything involving diagnosis, well, a recent experience will give you an idea. A request to investigate a battery charging issue was met with this brilliant proposal: Replace the brand new Bosch premium alternator with an identical genuine Volvo reman unit, at around $800, as the first step in any diagnosis of a charging system. I thought that sounded pretty unscientific and self-serving, so I found the problem myself by some deductive reasoning, replaced the battery (free under warranty) and solved the problem. The alternator replacement was the same proposal I got from the other "mom and pop" shop. I've caught the dealer inventing a camshaft seal leak "so severe" that the timing belt was drenched in oil, forgetting that I could easily pop the cover and look for myself. This is how it is here, so feel free to pass on a recommendation for a different shop, but I will also repeat my statement that I can go as far as San Jose or Sacramento.

I'm waiting for my brother to get back to me. It did not sound positive............! The ability to problem solve seems to be coming a rarity. They don't train then like they used to! :o

We are fortunate here that I worked for a very short period in one of our 2 dealerships to help out during a change in the way they worked. I have also been a customer for over 20 years so know most of the good mechanics and staff. The new dealership has a workshop and part manager who used to be a very good master mechanic at the older shop. They also got the best service advisers. I can't say thinks have always gone to plan or the diagnostic was always correct, but I'd say 95% they have been good and on the 5% we got thinks sorted out to my satisfaction.

We have 2 independents both who are only average at best. I used one until the original owner retired and no more as the guys now are not as customer focused.

If I get any info I will let you know, even if you may have already tried them.
