Re: windshield washer pump-where to buy

Just saw a 2007 XC70 at junk yard. Pulled the washer pump as spare. It says Fomoco 1S71-17K624-FE.

FCPEuro website lists...
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-31349228

Does anyone know if the Fomoco is as good as the Volvo washer pump (which is made in China anyway per FCPEuro)?

The pump I pulled out of my 07 was FoMoCo. I think it was the original from the factory, so it lasted about 15 years/175k.

Various parts on the 'noughties' Volvos have dual part numbers with FORD logos as well. In that case they are likely to be equally rubbish (or good??).

Ford parts, wow.

This is a perfect thread because my ‘04 window squirters have suddenly stopped, mid-winter of course.

(Wagon - with front / rear / headlight washers)

Front and rear windows both inop, so I don’t think it’s a clogged line. Full of non-freezing fluid. It’s just getting warm enough to fiddle with it outside and listen for the pump humming. Could it possibly be the fuse to the pump?

Any way to get to the pump from underneath without pulling the bumper cover?

Thanks -

It may be you want to check under there anyway. This is what we found on our son's car a few years back when the headlight washers were not working and the car was loosing fluid at a great rate:

viewtopic.php?p=471771&hilit=Headlight+washer#p471771

I now only use winter fluid. Not ideal for bug cleaning, but as we don't do huge mileages and use our washers a whole lot, it is likely we would still have summer (freezable) washer fluid in there into the winter. I believe that is what caused the failure on the washer part of the system.

Do people still do summer / winter w/s fluid?

Used to use summer and winter fluids in the 1990s until one day the fluid was frozen in December and I could not figure out why, then all of sudden remembered that I had summer juice.

If one lives in warmer climate, then even regular water is fine.

Otherwise, I use winter juice all year round, less hassle.

A look at the part’s diagram may help. On my kids 05 XC90 the washer was not working when purchased. Pump was tucked behind the fender liner on the passenger side. Easy job after removing the front tire.

URO was far from first choice but Amazon next day shipping made it easy to check off the list. Enough pressure to blow the T fitting under the hood lol. Amazing the crap what comes out of a 190k mile washer tank when you pull the pump…

Yep, winter type all year. Just like coolant.
Fun fact: Back in 1930's, alcohol based antifreeze was used. Polyethylene glycol was not available yet. Alcohol worked, but it was not a good corrosion inhibitor.
