Key Stuck in Ignition, 2000 S-40

Key will not come out of the ignition (not a new key - original that came with car). This previously occured if the release button on the gear shift (automatic transmission) would not pop back out after a shift. That is the case now. No amount of tapping on the gear shift will allow the gear shift button to come back out, thereby (hopefully) allowing me to take my key out.

Any thoughts?

Try turning the steering wheel to disengage.
