XC60D5 2.4L Twin turbo 2012

Post by precopster »

Hello friends it's been a long time. After a 3 year relationship with diesel powered Ssangyong products I'm back to Volvo once again.
I had 2 Ssangyong Stavics or Rodeus as they're better known in US markets and a Korando. Nothing wrong at all with the Stavics; a truly great vehicle if people movers are your thing. The Korando's not too bad apart from an Aussie designed transmission.

Just purchased a project 2012 XC60D5 twin turbo with a faulty camshaft (damaged cylinder head) and a Ford powered V60 2012 1.6L Ecoboost for resale.

Looking forward to going fully down the rabbit hole with 2 very crazy projects. Going to post lots of photos of both cars once I have them.

Stay well all.

Thanks Neil.

Brave and impulsive: the USA and Canada were fortunate enough not to receive the Ford powered variants of the early V60s. Before I had researched enough on the web I had already bought the car at auction. Relatively low K's at 147K however enough niggling engine problems and oil leaks to cause fear.

A beautiful package, shape and features, though Just hope that's enough. I found the MAP sensor at a Ford dealer for a quarter of the local Volvo price. Need a timing belt, valve cover gasket and an oil trap (all Ford parts so cheap and easy to obtain)

Found a great euro supplier called Alvadi (Estonia) that has awesome pricing and service as well as a spark plug variant that's 1/3 priced for Iridium.

As soon as parts arrive and I get stuck into repairs I'll post up some pics.

Really looking forward to that and yes I suppose there may be a few advantages to the Ford relationship, especially in Australia where parts for Volvos are even more challenging to get and expensive. I'm guessing even aftermarket stuff is a problem too.

Ford parts are nothing new. There is a thread on the P2 forum on owners surprised to find either Ford part numbers or logos on parts in their cars. Once you get to the P3 chassis apparently there is a lot more Ford influence in parts used and lower quality of them. I had considered a P3 at one point as our current newest vehicle is our sons hand me down P2 06 XC70 which we have had since 2011. But when talking to a Volvo senior mechanic I know, he told me P3's are junk and to stay away. I have been considering one of the last T5 XC70's which were made in around 2016. But then I read something they did not have the 5 cylinder engine but a 4. I'm guessing that is the same base as the V60 got around then.

Oh well.

Good to have you back as I said previously! Your knowledge and experience is good to have here again!

Yes Neil. There were 2 different Ford engines offered for the S60 and V60, a 1.6L turbo designated T4 and a 2.0L turbo designated T5 which debuted in 2014 in some markets where the model designation was T5. I believe this is where it gets a bit sketchy because the US market retained the 5 cylinder engine until the XC90 was introduced.

The engine designation for the 4 cylinder 2.0L unit was B4204T15

As the Volvo T5 with 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo was used in the 2015 model XC90 I assume this engine carried to the SPA model, perhaps someone can chime in here to correct me. I believe the B4204T23 used in the XC90 may be a derivative of this original 2.0L Ford engine.

Just got my 2012 XC60 D5 back from the Volvo specialist repairer with a near-new diesel engine with only 59 k miles. The vehicle has only around 66K miles.

Still have some minor gremlins to solve such as a non operating park brake and some squeaky front sway bar links and some minor cracked interior pieces (rear folding seat latches and surrounds)

Have driven the car for a couple of days now and it consistently gives around 35 miles to the gallon (US gallon) on long trips averaging 60mph.

It's so quiet and refined compared to previous Volvos I've owned so this is a big step up from the 2006 XC90 the (ex) wife used to drive, though the first gen XC90s were never a quiet ride. The ride is very well controlled and the steering so direct and sporty in feel. The infotainment system and navigation system is pretty dated by today's standards though. It could use an aftermarket Android head unit so sort that out.

This is a project car for sale as soon as I sort the gremlins we will be sadly parting ways.

The D5244T15 engine is truly amazing for economy in such a heavy vehicle!!
A predicted 1480km range if I had continued my journey!

I believe I averaged around 5.2L/100km or (45 mpg) on that 62km trip from work with a slight downgrade. Overall the car is averaging about 7L/100 or 33.6 mpg at 60mph.

A little more detailing and it will be up for grabs.

I had the twin turbo XC60 up for sale for afew months.....tried selling it through a respected (and expensive) web based car selling platform and all I seem to get is small niggling complaints about items I'm not willing to repair ie. some chrome missing on the steering wheel surround plate or slightly faded beige leather. Also I'm delving into some very minor suspension noise and have replaced a passenger control arm and both sway bar links. It looks like the top shock mounts on P3s are also a weakness so I may need to get those replaced too.

I've had 3 people over to see the car with literally hundreds of time wasting enquiries. It's on Facebook marketplace too.

VOLVO V60 2012 T4

Meanwhile I dived into the V60 repair and had to send it to a Ford specialist who replaced both VVT hubs and the cambelt as the repair required special (non-Volvo) tooling due to the Ford heritage..

There were multiple oil leak sources on the Ford 1.6L engine that had to be sorted. Quite frankly the engine is not what I call "a cracker" At 132KW and only 230Nm of torque it feels more like an NA engine.

There is a Vdash upgrade with 100Nm more torque available and I'm tempted to go that way soon as well as get the remote start activated. Will keep you all posted.

I replaced both front control arms on the XC60 as there was a squeaking noise every time I braked and was particularly loud at low speed.

I sold the 2012 XC60 D5 and now regret it. Was achieving 7.2-7.4L/100kms on my run to work every day. The engine was amazingly powerful.

My V60 1.6L T4 leaks oil like a typical British Ford & I'm beginning to tire of the lack of refinement in the engine. I replaced the inner and outer CV joints on both sides chasing a vibration that kept the car home for a week. Also replaced the transmission mount and I still live with slight vibration during hard acceleration that I can't track down. Some say the output shafts on the Ford dual clutch transmission can be the source.

These newer cars all have their snags after Ford involvement and cheapness. We did not get the diesel versions. I have seen a Youtube channel called Salvage Rebuilds UK. 2 really positive East End London guys. Hard to understand with their accents but I find them a great watch.

Anyway, they had a Diesel XC60 in with a bad engine. Apparently it is a known engine for going bad. They dealt with a company which almost exclusively ran their business repairing the engine in those and other Volvo products.

I'm struggling to find a newer Volvo past the P2 which is recommended by Volvo folks I know and trust. All come with challenges.

However, I strayed from Volvo and bought a one owner 03 Toyota 4Runner V8 Ltd that is now at around 120,000 miles. Apart from the ridiculous price I paid a main dealer for it it has broken in spectacular and expensive ways. It now sounds like a bad bearing is showing up somewhere in the driveline. I was told these cars were bullet proof and bought it as it had good seats and I could not find an R-design XC90 with the good seats. I wanted an XC90 R-design with the V8 but was warned off it due to a couple of design flaws with the engine. I could have had both those issues repaired for less than the price of replacement exhaust manifolds (they all crack around 100k miles, mine did to prove the point).

Glad to see you are still out there with Volvos!

Neil.
