1995 850 PCV job properly

Post by Kokonradus »

Hello,

just working on PCV that is fully clogged and I am not sure how to clean out the mess from engine PCV ports. Is it necessary to remove the oil pan to clen it from the inside?

Thanks for any experiences and advices :)

That looks like a lot of build up compared with what I found on my '97 855 on its first PCV job done in Dec 2022 at ~240k miles.
To clean mine out, I used Robert Spinner's suggestion of a drywall screw to pull the debris out of the hole. You can see the debris that was removed just below the hole:

Once you clear that out, the drain turns 90 degrees down into the oil pan maybe 3-4cm in from the front. Try a piece of wire or a thick zip-tie and see if you can get it around the corner and down to the oil pan. If you can't you may have to remove the oil pan to clear it from below if a piece of stout wire can't clear it. While that would be a pain, at least you would have the bonus of being able to replace the oil pan 'O' rings while in there.

I wonder if a long zip tie held in a drill would clear it out? Maybe hold a shop vac at the opening at the same time, with the oil cap off so the crank case is vented. I have not done the PCV system at all, so I'm thinking with no first hand experience doing the job.

If it´s clogged deeper, what about brush for bottle cleaning? Than drain the oil out. Maybe? Would it work or is there a risk of creating an oil system blockage from the PCV mess?

If you want to use a brush like that or at least try it, then you get the narrow oil way brushes that come in mettle bristles (careful in case they break off) or the nylon versions. I've seem brass versions but again wary of bristles breaking off.

Good Luck!

That looks like a good idea. I might try to flush the garbage out with kerosene or diesel afterwards and then fresh oil with a shorter oil change interval. Maybe even use thicker oil, if maybe some kerosene stays in the pan.... how well do these pans drain? I know they're more complicated than the pan on a Chevy or other US Domestic V8 like my 454 or Buick engines.

There is a picture near the bottom of Page 1 of this link which shows the PCV hoses running across the front of the engine including the one to the end of the intake manifold. Hopefully that will give you an idea where to look for the other end of it. It looks like it is a small/thin hard plastic black pipe.

Yes, good idea. I will try the silicone brush like this:

The suggestions about using the big end of a wire zip-tie or a drywall screw are for pulling the debris out of the port. Using a large brush might tend to push all the crud into the pan instead. Once the big crud buildup is pulled out of the opening the zip-tie can make the turn and help drag more out of the passage. It doesn't need to be shiny and polished, it just needs to be open more than it is now to let the crankcase breathe.
