The problem with the previous V70 was size, the rear leg room was cramped. In the UK people were complaining the V70 looked like a UK Ford Mondeo, not what you want after spending $55,000 (US) on a car, well not here anyway.

Comparing the previous V70 with the older850/V70 doesnt make good reading. The 850 appears to be built better, much more room, and less problems with the front suspension, but at that time Volvo was a Volvo and not a Ford.

I'm not impressed with the design aft of the front pillar. The high shoulders of the body and narrow, squat windows make it it look like the Dodge "Gangsta" cars. The front however, looks great with its nod toward the modern Audi grills.
2011 XC70 T6 - current
2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.

I just recently drove one of these new V70's as a loaner car from my Knoxville dealer while my wife's '05 V70 was getting service.

My first impression was correct, it is based on the S80 chassis. If you like the nimbleness of your current V70 ride and handling, you will probably not like the '08. On local bends where the '05 holds and wants more, the '08 is no where close. Larger more balloon tires (16"?) make it wallow with a more bulovard (sp!)ride.

The "Bliss" option was/is a great innovation. The blindspot on both sides is now worth $800 of safety.

The new inline 6, which is I believe the only engine availabe, is less fuel efficient by 2-3 mpg than our current 2.5T .... so in this time of seeking more efficiency, this Ford (?) owned company is going backwards. So along with the T5, the R is now gone.

One stupid  (sorry) change, if you are looking for a 12v outlet on the front dash area (like the '05's and others have), you will have to use the only one available that is in the rear of the center console. So, hook up your Valentine 1 and use the stretched cord to hang cloths out on. What a mistake that is. ( If you don't use a radar detector, my comment may not mean much to you.)

All in all it is a fine set of wheels. If you want the nimble, quick, "embarrass the kid in the hopped up Mustang" V70 you currently like, keep looking as this one will probably kill the model in a year or so. It should have been rebadged as the new V80 ....

Based on the S80 gives the needed rear seat legroom increase.
