We bought a house in the UK about 40 years ago. It was a new build by one of the largest builders in the UK. I was shocked when I got into the attic to find that there was NO sheithing at all under the tar paper!! They just ran the rolls over the top, then nailed in the small horizontal slats that the clay tiles hung on! It was quite a shock.

Thank you. Yes the norm here is plywood or OSB board but it has its problems when nailing slates into it. I spend a few weeks chasing down a supplier for the sarking as nobody stocks it nowadays.

Here's a video I made 6 months into the build

^ Thanks ! I like seeing how things are done in other places. And yes; we still use 1x's for Spanish tile and similar types of roofing. But it's usually spaced apx a board width apart. Most everything else looks the same.

Sorry to keep going off topic, but I have a question -

These seem to be solid concrete blocks, not hollow blocks with reinforcing bars and vertical grouted cavities. They aren't just stacked, are they? Are they put up like a large-scale mortared brick wall? Where is the reinforcing?

Like Sveedy, just curious.

Yes solid concrete blocks with mortar between and pointed. They don't require any reinforcement, the back wall is in two parts with a flexible join in the centre running vertically top to bottom

^ Well that is a bit different. In this neck of the woods it would never meet code.

I should know better, than to question those who have been building a few centuries longer than we have. Not many castles here abouts :)

Building codes in UK and EU are much more stringent than most any US State or local code.

UK codes are pretty hard on the person trying to build anything. Here in Calgary they have clear rules and multi-point inspections at various stages by plumbing inspectors, electrical, structural and final inspection. Like all things you get good people and bad doing the inspections. Luck of the draw who you get on the day. Fortunately, all the ones we got during the house renos and then the garage build were fair and easy to work with.
