Rear spring removal 855t.

Post by rguzz »

I will be replacing the original rear springs with a set of very low mileage springs from a wagon. This will be a new task for me. Is there anything I need to replace while doing this job. There are no spring seats I gather so should be nothing to do except a straight swap, no?

#1387907, spacers, I ordered a couple they were about 12 bucks a piece, genuine Volvo. I'll use them whether or not they are needed, thanks.

OK, so what is the correct orientation of the lower spring to the spring perch? The perch is like a half moon, round at the front and flat in the back. May I assume the spring ends at the flat spot on the perch? I don't think that was the orientation when I removed them.

No fear, this is a nice and easy job. Just get the rear end high enough so the springs are not compressed at all.

Yes. Just can't see exactly how the lowermost coil sits in the lower perch, which has a half moon configuration that holds the spring in position? Beginning to think it doesn't really matter. You can see what I'm referring to, not very clearly, in a pic showing the inside of the lower perch, near the end of this: viewtopic.php?t=95813.

Looking at the pictures you can estimate that the end of the spring is positioned almost if not at the front of it as you cannot see it in the picture. Does the top of the spring qrientate it?

I tucked the last spring coil end so it nestled in to the straighter part of the half moon, but I think it might have been 180 degrees to the front of that, which might have been where I found it, as you suggest. (It had already shifted position when I released tension in it). Seems to not matter? Koni FSD's replaced the Sachs/Boge I recently put in and the ride is much better. In fairness this time around I didn't measure the height of the rear so I can't say if springs or shocks, which one was the main culprit responsible for the squishy ride. But it definitely sits higher, bounces back better. Fronts are next, springs and Koni's, the older springs and Sachs shocks are silly squishy up front as well. I reminded myself to do final tightening of shocks, springs and retaining plate at the end with car on the ground. Hah, but 20 minutes a side, no not really!
