What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

Today when in the glovebox I noticed a broken cord at the rear and after a bit of investigation I discovered it was for the soft open mechanism.

I stripped the glove box out and try as I might there was no way I was going to get a secure fixing for the cord with the brass ferrule so decided to restring the entire mechanism
It's not the easiest of items to dismantle, the bottom part of the plunger is tricky to separate and requires gentle persuasion.

It took me several attempts with the length of the cord before I found something close to what it should be. I settled for 195mm between the knot and top of the loop

All back together and ready to refit. Note the end grommit should be on in the opposite direction

Fixed my front and rear bulb out errors. The front blinker has a wierd wire splice to connect the driver turn signal. Need to fix it up.

Planning on pulling every fuse and relay in the car and cleaning it with sand paper before putting it back in. May dielectric grease some in contacts in the engine compartment we will see.

I’m doing some highly technical work today -

A new brake light bulb, spray some of the winter off, and take off the snow tires.

I decided my task today would be to fit my USB socket/voltage gauge into the space for the 12v socket of the CCM. I had previously fitted this to the XC90 and removed it before selling as it’s always handy to know the state of the battery and charging, plus USB is more convenient that a 12v socket.

I bought this from Amazon about 5 years ago and discovered the diameter was too large to fit into the hole when the 12v socket was removed.

I put it in my lathe and removed the threads plus a little more until it was a good tight fit.

Today was supposed to be an quick easy job that took way longer than it should as I decided whilst the CCM was out I may as well remove the cup holder and de-gunk whatever had been spilled in there causing it not to open.

We are moving to a new place. All my car tools are still in my old garage. Today I drove on a battery down there to replace a dead alternator. I had it rebuilt a few years back, but it started acting up a year ago and died completely a few weeks ago. Have no time to figure out what did I do wrong, decided to replace it with a brand new Bosch alternator. So I did it. While working on it, after 2 years of idle time (was driving big Toyotas mostly), I had a flash back of ole good times when I almost slept under broken Volvos. You know... Garage twilight, old leather and hot lubricants smells... And I got drunk. No need in printed instructions, VIDA, howtos, youtube - I did it zillion times. An old friend from past had called and we had a sentimental talk... Ah, ole good times...
