How do you know your 2003 does not have the PEM?
My excuse is old age, and failing vision.
You are correct.
Blind groping I found the PEM right front top of the fuel tank.
It will be replaced when the new part arrives.

Thank you so much.

- The PEMs for P2 cars are all interchangeable. Please see the tread linked below.

- You can easily find the PEM at local junk yard for ~$15-$25 or so.
Look for a newer unit with later date of mfg, if possible.
Better: get 2 of them, and test both, then save one in the trunk as a spare.

- You can even do this without raising the car, although it is easier with BOTH RF and RR tires on a ramp.
I have wood ramps, so I drive the RF and RR tires on the ramps to make it easier.

- I posted the info here, note the screw is 7-mm type, 7-mm socket works fine but
not necessary, you can get away with a pair of pliers:

FYI: My daughter was cruising a major five lane boulevard at 45mph when it died, and had to be pushed off the road.

Your help is appreciated.

The PEM module has been removed.
Following advice of many sources, shaking the old module sounds like a Maraca.

Thank you to my local dealers
LaFontaine Volvo Farmington Hills, MI
Suburban Volvo Troy, MI
for verifying by VIN# the superseded part number.

I have ordered $42.00 (one year warranty) a good used PEM module # 30769225, waiting for it to arrive.

Still trying to resolve right headlight not working.

Thank you.

Might be worthwhile starting a new thread on your headlight issue. Sometimes when you have a major issue things like this can get missed.

When you say headlight, do you mean the whole headlight unit is not working or just the actual headlight? If it is just the headlight, have you tested the bulb? Worst case swap it to the other side and see if it works there.

Tested with two new bulbs, still not working.
When it is fully running, I will start new threads for other issues.
Thank you.

So is it just the lo beam or high beam not working? I have had issues with some bulb holders on Volvo lighting where they seem to melt the surrounding plastic so the bult will not ground correctly. If all the other bulbs on that headlight unit are working then it should be easier to track down.

Good afternoon.

The saga continues.
New PEM connected, the fuel pump runs, it started and idled strange.

FYI: Found the issue is a broken crank position bracket.
For anyone not aware, this is a plastic bracket with a threaded stud.
Apparently when I replaced the sensor, nut removal started fracturing the bracket, and installation finished it.
Careful examination of the threaded stud showed corrosion.
My best guess: I over stressed the plastic, and engine vibration made the unsecured sensor rise roughly 5mm = strange idle.

Ordering by VIN# from my local dealer $26.00 with five in stock.
Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor Bracket
Part Number: 30637803

Thank you.

Well,

Glad you fixed it.
All along was the classic bad PEM as I told you.

PS: Now get another PEM, test to be sure it works, then leave it in the trunk as spare.
Tons of used PEMs on ebay for $40-$50.
