96 850 Wagon - Replace Outer CV Boot Only

96 850 Wagon - Replace Outer CV Boot Only

Hi,
I have a 96 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. The outer CV boots are bad/torn, inners are fine. No problem so far with CV clicking or needing replacement.

Is there a tutorial for just replacing the rubber boot without pulling the axles? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think in edge terms what you saying where you don't still take it off from the car is use something what you can pull over axle after taking it off from the hub...
But if doesn't want to do even that then split cv boot which needs be glued in place is your option i am afraid.

Yea there are split boots that can be placed around the CV axles and glued together but they won't last as long. I've seen videos of people able to stretch a rubber boot over a funnel without having to remove the axle.

There is an actual tool for that!

Above is an example. Air powered. Not sure how it may affect the narrow end of the boot stretching it that much!

I think pulling the axle is the worst part, and I want it on the bench to clean and repack , anyway

Disassembly of the stub axle from the half shaft takes brute force; the workbench or solid ground are your friends, along with a stout hammer.
Put a small catch pan under the transmission and pull the axle is my suggestion.

When you clean and repack these and look at the metal quality you will realise why you shouldn’t buy the crap from Stone Auto or OOO-URO-Rejects
