Krons, Thank you for that advice and I like your sense of humor! I’ll tell you what, tho, if I find there IS access below the seat, Ima be quite upset with our mechanic!

Referenced earlier, there was a recall for pumps, 2001-2005, plenty of conditions relating to the recall and just to mention in passing since this is an '04- https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2009/R ... 3-9234.pdf

Fuel smell from the rear is probably the seal or a cover crack as has been noted earlier. It's worth pulling the seat as suggested above, pretty sure you'll find it's just the smaller tank with a pump ring on passenger side and a sensor ring on the driver side just like the others. Transition to the larger tank occurs somewhere in MY05 I think, my '05 5cyl chassis number 1354xx (last 6 of VIN) had the smaller tank when I bought it. Old PN is 8639028, tank is pretty standard across the line. I know this scenario quite well, having experienced it after an overconfident driver's side sensor replacement and just a little bit of sand in the tank ring channel when putting everything back together. Not pleasant in the least.

As far the as the instrument panel and the other stuff not working, you might check to see if your battery is in decent shape then start from there with something that'll read Volvo codes. Plenty to work on it looks like, this is a MY04 so the older version CEM with relays just to keep in mind. Maybe after expressing your consternation with your mechanic (leave the seat out and show them), you can parlay it into a free code read and post back here. Plenty of folk can add their 2 cents and help to steer you in the right direction if you're serious about keeping the vehicle.

To the more general audience and as a point of curiosity, does this model year get a PEM? I know the '05 does (whole bunch of electronics change) but does the '04?

Good catch. My kids 02 S60 had top of fuel pump cracked and leaking. I was shocked when a call to VolvoUSA had them willing to cover the cost of the repair. Worth a phone call if that is it.

However, if it is a cracked top of the fuel pump it should leak when tank isn’t full. If this situation is only when tank full likely the seal on the fuel pump then.
