The real geekfest is over on bobistheoilguy - but fair warning, don't go too far down that rabbit hole if you are easily influenced by pseudo-science psychobabble. The best information I've seen published recently is by a petrochemical engineer in Hot Rod.
Oh I'm a regular over there. :-)

But mostly for catching sales on oil and the maintenance forum. I enjoy reading about other people's car projects.

I have long abandoned the quest to find the "best" oil.
For me now the "best" = meets specs and I get it on sale/clearance.

Most of the oil I have used in my cars costs me $0-$3/qt due to clearance prices and rebates. And yes I do realize the quest for brand name oil on sale/clearance only saves me about $15-$32 per oil change but it's a fun quest. Plus I change oil for friends so the savings are passed on to them as well.

I bought a 2.5 gallon container of something from TSC. It took me forever to use it all. In fact, I may still have a bit. I'll have to check the shelf. I'm thinking it was gear oil for my truck, and I have no idea why I'd buy that much.

I’m the same, I seem to find 10w30 synthetics in the local farm store clearance area which works fine for late Spring through early Fall in my area. Got some 0w40 on Amazon $4/5qt a while back too. General consensus is anything Warren formulates is good stuff (Walmart Supertech).

I change at 5000 or less with my higher mileage Volvos to keep the engines clean so for me any oil SN spec or better is fine. I do lean towards high mileage synthetics as the price gap to semi-syns is pretty small and theoretical better to keep seals in shape and manage turbo heat.

I’ve even been tempted to run cheap Delvac 1300 15w40 in the summer. That one is a conventional dino base but being heavier weight doubt it’d create issues if used in the summer.

Here is an interesting site…especially when they find some of these oils not meeting spec.

I run farm store diesel oil in almost everything I own, either 15/40 or 5/40. I have two diesel trucks so I buy 5 gallon buckets of it. Most air-cooled motorcycles love it, my Volvos always get it, bikes, dirt bikes, small engines, etc.

I don't obsess over it. I did at one time but as long as it meets specs I'll run it.

My kid has a focus that takes 5w20 and she has a wrangler with a 2.0 turbo. That's still under warranty so I use exactly what they call for.

Interesting going through the list of oils on the link. I have never heard of the oils that are in the grey or red zone, but the same names come up in the fail zones time and again. The only concerning one from what to me is a 'known' brand was a Valvoline NextGen product.

For me these days, I try to change my oil once a year, but none of our cars get close to a change on mileage. My Toyota is the highest mileage vehicle annually currently and it does about 4000 miles a year at best. I stick to Castrol mostly as I have used that brand for the last 50 years. So far, so good!
