^ Yep. First it would do what you're describing, then it stopped retracting at all and just tilted. Then that stopped. I checked the motor and it worked perfectly, so I knew it was a track issue. Feeling around up in the track I could feel a piece of something, so out with the glass cassette and that's when I found the broken bits. It's nice that the glass comes out as easily as it does. 6 screws and it's out.

Just discovered the same issue, front passenger's track arm sheared on my '99 V70 XC. Do we have any good instructions laying around for removing just the cassette if possible without having to pull the headliner out? In my case I may be able to get away with some Dremel and epoxy action as it's the pot metal portion that broke.

I noticed the front would close at random depths and wouldn't "stay put" as it used to.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Looking at the parts drawing, I don't see a way to remove much other than the glass without taking the cassette out which unfortunately means the headliner too.

If you go onto the Volvo OE parts sites with their parts layout you can see what I mean. Not great but you can see from this drawing from a 98 Volvo hard copy parts book:
