Talking of insanity, being the case of doing the same thing over and over expecting it to be better each time? Well my PITA R continues to defy all attempts for me ever to forgive it. I had pulled the dash and today finally got some time to try to repair it. Initially it looked like it was not terrible like some of those I have seen Robert repair. When I looked closer, once again the R has managed to break in new ways I have never seen before.

The was slight cracking on one mount on the RHS outer, and the LHS inner had come apart. Simple, fit and replace. That was until I found the area under the dash on the LHS which goes under the steering column and mounts the under tray is split in several places. Then the speedo 'hoop' for mounting the speedo unit is cracked and broken. I knew the surround of the glove box liner was broken in one corner and was not going to be easy to fix. But then the final kicker, the whole of the RHS end has broken off. This dash is beyond saving!

I will now have to assess if the spare I have which has a split on the top is a more viable repair. It will mean removing the center section and swapping it over but hopefully it is otherwise a much easier repair!

Neil.

I hate P80 dashes... the plastics are so weak. It's a shame, really, because it's actually a nice looking dash IMO.

Headliner was sagging down and launching the orange foam into my face every so often.

Now after doing the headliner I'll have to actually replace the dashboard since this one is barely held together with epoxy, melted zip ties, and sticky tack. I have a spare dash, and I've been applying fiberglass to the back since on top of being 25+ year old brittle plastic, it's also a fragile design with barely any reinforcement.

I'd probably pay $800 for a new production dashboard if it meant not worrying about awful swedish plastic.

That would be really awesome if someone started producing those. Sort of like the company that was making reproduction 850R bumpers.

A dash from Volvo is in the $3500 CDN or $2700 US region currently. I did look at it before falling over at the price!!

I am in the process of repairing a 'spare' das as the original was beyond repair. I am doing it the same way as the last one with glued and screwed pipe hanger strips (28 gauge x 3/4") as per Robert DIY. It is nearly impossible to find 28 gauge here in Canada. Hopefully my order will come in tomorrow. I used thicker gauge strips last time but it was really hard to bend the way you need it to be. There will be some plastic welding thrown in for good measure!

Is that a price for an actual available 850 dash from Volvo? At that price it better be re-engineered and using whatever plastic blend Japanese manufacturers use for their dashboards that seems to actually last in the sun. And what I was doing that seemed to be working is using fiberglass but with ABS cement instead of fiberglass resin, put down a thick layer of cement, press the fiberglass into it, and then apply another layer of cement with pressure to make sure the two cement layers are connected through the fibers.

If I won the lottery I'd spend good money to open production lines and become a version of Uro parts that's actually good.

I hear you on that one. No that is the price of a V/S 70 dash. If they are still available I would expect the 850 one to be similar.

This link to a Volvo parts site makes no sense. Item #4 says it is the 'upper' dashboard. If that is the case for an 850 is 'only' $1000 CDN around $750 US. Chances are you are buying 25 year old stock!!

https://www.volvovancouverparts.ca/a/Vo ... 68442.html

By comparison and V/S70 dash is as stated earlier around $3600 CDN, Item #1 in the drawing and various versions:

It most likely is 25 year old stock, meaning it'll also probably shatter upon installation lol.

Crank no fire no start on the Kat

I only had 30 to get to train so I grabbed Catherine the P2. Not sure I could hear fuel pump. She has been occasionally hard starting due to ECT
