I am helping my new Volvo friend Ed with his 96 850 10V base. He was told there is a rod knock, but I'm hoping it was a bad diagnosis as the water pump shaft is wobbling like a good 'un. I think it is the impeller that is causing the knocking noise. It is definitely bad as it is leaking water.

So far it has been so much easier working on a car where you are not lying on a cold floor flat on your back!

Hardest part so far is the water pump is in the trunk but the battery is completely flat and the trunk lock is jammed so the key won't turn. At least Volvo has done one thig right in that the seat backs in the 850 sedan fold down giving access!!

Got the car to the point of draining as much water as the radiator and block drain will do, and after a lot of faffing around managed to find all the alignment marks for the timing belt. Someone had mad so many thick white marks on the pulleys it was impossible to tell the correct ones!

Had to keep rotating the engine cleaning all the marks off to make sure I found the correct ones!

Tomorrow, TB off, and then remove the water pump and fit the new one. Hopefully enough time to refit the original TB and start the car if the battery is charged and see if we have fixed the knocking noise! If we are successful, then I will go over the car and see what else needs doing. The RR parking brake does not work and I think the caliper may be seized as well for starters. Then there are various heat shield nuts missing, broken limit pads on the front control arms and of course the trunk lock I've noticed so far. That was the quick check!!

Which is the lining marks below............? Previous person that worked on this put so much paint on hard to find the correct ones!

And yes, once I figured one out the rest became more obvious what they meant!

Neil.
Congrats on getting a lift. I look forward to the day.

At least your timing marks lined up with something. The person who did the cam seals in my S70 flipped the cam gears. So none of the timing marks lined up. Made that job more fun.

I'm actually planning on picking up a lift tomorrow for my shop. Spending the money isn't going to be fun, but it will make my job easier and make me more money, so it's worth it.

Nice lift. I'm all for safety but those caution strips have got to go. I'd get so tangled in them it would be more of a hazard.

I've been enjoying the lift at my local Makerspace for years. I encourage everyone to join a Makerspace with a lift if there's one near them.

Wow, I'm so glad that the 850 did its job protecting the occupant. Sad to lose another car though. I could use the 20x short lug bolts for those Cetus wheels. PM me with a price for them plus shipping to NH.
brunocerous wrote: 31 May 2023, 13:44 I changed the front rotors and brake pads on Blue Steel. While in there, I noticed that the seals on both calipers had started to peel away from the edges, so I have some more work to do.
If you can, please post pictures of the failing seals in my caliper failure thread. I'm always curious about caliper failures and how to prevent them. Rebuilt calipers are far and away the weakest link in every P80 I've owned.

And the person who was driving is fine, just a little cut up from glass.

And on the same note, does anyone in the area have a 93-98 p80 they're thinking of parting with?

Lifts are 100% worth the money, you will never regret it!
I was searching the forums as this has to be a common problem. 2000 S70, has some broken valves and I can’t rotate the engine to line up the timing marks to put the cam lock on. My question is if we pull the head without lining up the timing marks how do I set the timing once the head is rebuilt?

Once the head is off you set the crank to the mark, then put the head on. Without the cam cover all the valves are closed so there is no contact. When you install the cams just eyeball the slots ( one up and one down to approximate the timing marks, once the cam pulleys are on you can get it exact. You might be a tooth or two off eyeballing the slots.

I think it’s intake slot up, and exhaust down but I always look it up. Remember the engine isn’t horizontal so the slots should be parallel to the cam head surface, not the ground
