I bumped or linked the burnt valve discussion thread. You should think about that for your T5 if it is a long term keeper…FireFox31 wrote: ↑05 Jun 2023, 23:32Looks like that valve is missing a chunk. Is that what we all mean by a "burnt valve"? Does it cause loss of compression?
I want to tear apart a white block engine to learn how it all works. I'd like to eliminate engine oil burning and leaking on my cars, so it seems like engine disassembly and rehab will be required.
What did you do to your Volvo today? Topic is solved

Well hopefully the 96 850 NA 10V is doing well. The owner took it home today after I finally caught up on the urgent stuff.
Engine was a little noisy at the top end until we took it for a run around the neighbourhood. The engine went from what sounded like lifter knock to running beautiful and smooth. No rocketship but ran nicely. Brakes settled too after I ground the rotors both sides to remove the rust and a few areas that were market by brake pads sitting on the rotors for some time.
There is still a list of stuff to do. But for now I asked the owner to just put some miles on the car to make sure there are no other unknown major issues jumping out to bite us.
There is an ever larger list as I worked on stuff and had things apart. Needs a driver's door limit strap, the shift lock is not moving out of park without using the over-ride button. Most likely a bad gearshift knob button or possibly the electrical portion of the ignition being worn. The owner says jiggling the key sometimes fixes it.
Fuel filter, LH tie rod ( recommended doing both and an alignment) are the 2 most pressing issues along with the odometer gears. Finding a replacement short head wheel bolt (on so tight it broke my wheel socket and rounded the bot head a bit).
The question is how far to go or the owner wants to go. I would say we have possibly $750-1250 to go in parts (CDN) which includes replacing the terribly cracked original windshield (real safety issue). There is some welding needed to the rocker panels, but unless we remove the cover panels we don't know how bad it really is. For now it is debugging and running the car, making a list and deciding priorities.
Neil.

The bigger issue, is while it is possible to do this on an engine, the reality is when the stem seals are badly worn on a white block, you are better pulling the head and cleaning the valves and checking for carbon build up = burnt valves.
Smart move Abscate! And thanks Robert for pointing out the challenges of doing this!

Replaced ABS harness connector on driver's side for '98 V70 using crimps as there is so much oxidation and so little copper. Speedo now works again, so no "additional road tax" to the state via the LEOs.
Checked and verified driver's CV shaft blew the EMPI boot. Believe it to be a manufacturing defect because this isn't the boot that received a blow. Ran it until the joint started popping upon change of direction. Tossing a remanufactured shaft in and will look into having old one checked by machine shop and potentially be reworked. It costs approximately twice what the remanufactured shaft costs to get it reworked, but this place does a lot of local engine work and is ALWAYS busy for all the right reasons so I feel confident over some non-name reman'ed shaft. Fit my old 15 inch michelin defenders on my P2 s60 today. They are leaps and bounds ahead of the crappy tire bargain brand i had on earlier (sub 70$ tires). Learned my old winters will also fit on my P2 as i have the smaller brakes.
I think i may do a video log over the engine swap on the old battle wagon after some words from my friends.

Certainly start a thread here to catalog it. With pictures, please. It's always educational to see the engine removed and engine bay empty since that's an uncommon sight.
