C70 T5 Convertible year 2002

Post by hadleighboy »

Hi Newbie here
I need some advise....my wife and I love our T5 Convertible BUT we broke down and have been advised the Alternator has failed. I would like to have a go at replacing this my self and need a little guidance as their are no manuals about like Haynes....
To get the Alternator out which looks tight the Power steering unit needs to be unbolted how do you get to the bolts behind the pulley which will slaken of the belt?

You help would be much appreciated from this newbie and wished I found this site a while back..

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for the alternator, in my car is a Bosch 120amp Volvo code 9459077

Many thanks
Hadleighboy

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The auxiliary or serpentine belt is self tensioning. Look to the left of the alternator and you will see a small plastic cap in the centre of a small pulley wheel. Remove the plastic cap and you will find a nut. Put a spanner on the nut and turn clockwise as far as possible. This relieves the tension on the belt which can now be removed. Make sure you know which way round the pulleys the belt goes.

To replace the belt relieve the tension in the same way.

For parts in the UK I always recommend:

http://www.partsgateway.co.uk/

They do not sell parts but will send your requirements to several new and used parts dealers who will give you quotes very quickly.

This is what the front of your engine looks like with all the other bits removed.

It shows the tensioner position and will help when you have forgotten the routing of the belt!!

From VADIS instructions: "Remove the plastic cover on the belt tensioner using a small screwdriver."

If there is no screw to take out I would think it just prises off.

Glad that The Parts Gateway could help. I have never been disappointed with them yet.

The replacement Alternator is in,
The reverse installation was straight forward completed in 45 mins not bad for a novice working on this engine.
I have checked the voltage on the battery - when the car is running @ 2,000 revs and also with a/c runnning and this is topping out @ 13volts is this right?
I was told that the alternator sould pump out 14volts to the battery

Your thought would be appreciated, I took the car for a spin this evening and all running OK just a little worried about the voltage not reading what I was told.
The battery is the original one and seems to be OK

Cheers
Michael

Glad to know that it is back together.

Regarding voltage, I have always been lead to believe that an alternator should put out between 13 & 15 volts. The last time I checked mine it was 13.2v.

More important is how much the voltage drops when you have certain items switched on.

To do a check on the positive side connect your voltmeter between battery positive terminal and the generator B+ terminal. Start the engine and run at 2000rpm. Switch on headlights, rear screen heater and the heater blower. If the voltage drop is more than 0.2 volts check the circuit between the B+ terminal and the starter for loose or corroded connections. Also check the circuit between the starter and the battery positive terminal.

To check the earth (ground) circuit connect your voltmeter between the battery negative terminal and the generator housing. Again run at 2000rpm and switch the same things on. If the voltage drop here is more than 0.2 volts check the battery terminals, chassis earth (ground) connections and engine earth (ground) connections for corroded or loose connections.

There is one more test which is for the output of the alternator but, as it is new, should not be necessary.
