98-00 Center Console compatibility?

Post by WhatAmIDoing »

I grabbed a well used center console from a 2000 XC for my project 98 V70. I really just wanted to have a cigarette lighter and cup holders back. Unfortunately, the big white plug to power all the accessories seems to be different from the one on the console. Pic attached. The connector for the OBD port fit no problem. I also found a bunch of other 2 wire connectors, and a green 8pin connector that looked like it was audio related. They were all tied into the same harness. I thought these were all universal fit, so I'm rather stumped?

Volvo changed a lot of wiring in 1999 from 1998. Didn't realise that the center console was part of that.

Are the wiring harnesses the same in wire colors and number of wires? If so you may need to pull the other part of the harness and splice it in place of the existing one.

Our family has had 4 of these P80 cars, but none newer than '988 which led me to believe (emphatically) that the wiring harnesses were identical. I learned something today. Thank you sir.
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell. 😕
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

Checked the wiring in my 98 S70 and the car harness matched the V70s. So at least in 2000 Volvo must have used a slightly different wiring harness for the console. Which is weird to me when they look the same, and VolvoPartsWarehouse says the harnesses should be the same, or they at least have the same part numbers.

Both harnesses have 8 wires, but the '00 only has 6 pins so there's a splice. Colors are mostly the same, but the '00 has 2 pink (I believe into the same pin), and the 98 has a solid red the '00 doesn't have. Might need to source a wiring diagram of the console for both years.

I may have a wiring harness kicking around for a P80 center console. I will need to check if/which harness end it has. May take a day or so to track it down!

The spare wiring harness I have is the same large plug like in your picture. The console came from a 98 V70. The only rider on that is I took a broken one out of a 98 and fitted one from a junkyard. To be honest I can't recall if I swapped the harnesses or just fitted the whole center console. What I pulled the console could have been 98,99,00 as all years were there at that time. I notice the smaller connector has 7 pins and the larger one only seems to have 6. Need a wiring diagram to figure out what the differences are.

The SRS module on a 99 sits under the console and is completely different than -98 , so no surprise the wires are different.

If you grab a 99-00 c70 though, it’s the same as that model didn’t get logic fired SIPS like the V/S 70 in 99

So I took the time to de-pin the male connector to do some testing. I grabbed a very good wiring diagram for the 98, and a not so good one for 2000. I was able to get the front cigarette lighter and both heated seats working.

Based on my diagrams and testing, the wire colors do match between 98 and 00 for S/V 70s; however, the front and rear cigarette lighters are wired differently. I could only get the front one to work. I don't know if the rear has a bad wire or is broken due to a non-obvious reason, but I could not get power. I also learned that C70s are wired differently. They have different color wires and use different pinouts for the same functions as the S70. So I do not believe a C70 console will be plug and play in an S/V 70.

To get my 00 console to work in my 98, I connected like to like. Which works for everything except Red, Yellow w/ white, and Yellow w/ violet. Red is for rear heated seats. My console does not have a switch for that, so it can be ignored. The two Yellows both pertain to the cigarette lighters: violet for front and white for rear. The 2000 console splices the 2 together for front and rear. I tried violet first; no power. White gave me power to just the front, so the rear may be broken. According to the wiring diagrams, the rear 12V on 98 is wired similarly to both the front and rear on 00.

For 98 S/V70 (and 99-00) the wire colors are as follows referencing the female side on connector 24/7A (# refer to terminal in 98):
1) Red = rear heated seat (not sure if all 98s are pre-wired for this)
2) Blue w/ yellow = junction point 23/503 (male to 24/2A:3) (not sure what these are related to)
3) Yellow w/ violet = front 12v outlet (male side goes to RTI module?)
4) Straight Black = ground
5) yellow w/ white = rear 12v outlet (LHD & RHD wired different on male side)
7) pink = left & right heated seat
8.) Green w/ brown = right heated seat
10) Yellow w/ red = left heated seat

Hopefully this well help others in the future. If I ever get a 98 console out, I will directly compare the two for wiring differences and report back here. Obviously 00 handles wiring differently for the cigarette lighters.

It will not. The plugs are different, too.
